MIAMI -- Marlins right-hander Dan Straily on Tuesday dropped his appeal and will immediately start the five-game suspension given to him by Major League Baseball for throwing at Giants catcher Buster Posey at AT&T Park on June 19.
Along with Straily, manager Don Mattingly served his one-game suspension on Tuesday, when the Marlins fell to the D-backs, 5-3. Bench coach Tim Wallach managed the club in the second of four games with Arizona.
"He's dropping the appeals," Mattingly said of Straily. "That means I got dropped too."
Per MLB rules, Mattingly's suspension hinged on what the punishment was for Straily, who also was fined an unspecified amount.
After warnings were issued in the second inning against the Giants on June 19, Straily plunked Posey, drawing an immediate ejection from home-plate umpire Andy Fletcher. Mattingly was also tossed that game due to the warnings that came after San Francisco's Dereck Rodriguez hit Miami center fielder Lewis Brinson with a pitch.
MLB issued the suspensions last Thursday, but because Straily appealed, he was able to make his next scheduled start, on Monday in a 9-5 win against the D-backs. Straily worked 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, and he was credited with the win.
Straily's suspension will conclude on Sunday, making him eligible to start in the series finale with the Mets.
Mattingly didn't firmly commit to Straily going that day, but it's likely.
"We'll work it out where he pitches," Mattingly said.
The Marlins' rotation is in flux this week with Jose Urena (right shoulder tightness) and Caleb Smith (Grade 3 lat strain) both on the disabled list. Smith is likely out for the season, but Urena is making progress.

The earliest Urena is eligible to come off the 10-day DL is Sunday. The Marlins will have to sort out how they want to slot Straily and Urena back into the rotation.
Tuesday was the first time Urena had thrown since going on the DL, throwing on flat ground from 60-90 feet.
"I think he's got a 'pen on Friday," Mattingly said. "Then we'll go from there and see how that goes. We expect that to go well. He feels great. We just want to make sure he has proper rest."
Elieser Hernandez got the Tuesday start in Urena's spot, and Wei-Yin Chen and Trevor Richards will start on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. The team still must decide on who will pitch Friday and Saturday against the Mets. Ben Meyer and Brett Graves are both on the active roster and are available to spot start. In the Minor Leagues, prospects Sandy Alcantara, Jarlin Garcia and Dillon Peters are options on the 40-man roster.
Worth noting:
• Catcher J.T. Realmuto was not in the starting lineup for the second straight night Tuesday, as he continues to rest his sore left wrist, which was injured after being hit with a foul tip behind the plate in Colorado on Sunday. Mattingly said that there's no serious damage in Realmuto's wrist and that X-rays came back negative, but the team wanted to give him one extra day off. He could be back in the lineup on Wednesday.

"He's getting better," Mattingly said. "Last night, we didn't want to use him at all. Tonight, in an emergency."
• The Marlins announced Tuesday the signings of six 2018 MLB Draft selections. A couple were already done deals but are now official: shortstop Osiris Johnson (second round), catcher Will Banfield (Competitive Balance Round B), outfielder Tristan Pompey (third round), catcher Cameron Barstad (sixth round), right-hander Sam Bordner (16th round) and right-hander Justin Evans (19th round).
