PITTSBURGH -- Before Carlos Gómez agreed to a Minor League deal with the Rangers on Saturday, the Marlins had interest in the veteran outfielder, who cleared waivers earlier in the afternoon.
Miami continues to explore other options, and Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur could be a possibility in a waiver deal prior to the Aug. 31 waiver Trade Deadline.
The Marlins are seeking corner outfield depth, and Francoeur would be a right-handed-hitting option to share time with Ichiro Suzuki, who has been serving as the starting right fielder with Giancarlo Stanton out for potentially the rest of the year.
In seeking depth in any position, the organization is mindful of not disrupting clubhouse chemistry. Francoeur is highly respected and would be a popular addition in the eyes of a number of Miami players.
The question would be the cost to acquire the veteran. Miami doesn't want to part with Class A Advanced Jupiter right-hander Luis Castillo for a player who would be with the organization short-term. But there is a general sense Miami and Atlanta could find a match for a lower-level prospect.
President of baseball operations Michael Hill and his staff continue to explore position player depth. Gerardo Parra of the Rockies could be another potential target.
On Friday, the Marlins added an internal candidate when Xavier Scruggs was promoted from Triple-A New Orleans. The 28-year-old is getting a chance to handle first base until Justin Bour (right ankle sprain) comes off the disabled list at some point in September.

Recently, Miami also brought up Robert Andino from New Orleans to add infield and left field depth.
Manager Don Mattingly said he is confident in the roster and the organizational depth.
"We talked in Spring Training, and I look at it like this is our team," Mattingly said. "These are our guys. When we're there with 60 guys in camp, or whatever, we know that some guys are going to end up being in the Minor Leagues.
"I always look at it like, 'These are our guys.' This is not the same place like an L.A. or New York, and we can go out and take on salary. We're going to play with the guys that we have, for the most part."
The Marlins could use an impact bat with the slugging Bour and Stanton (left groin strain) on the DL. Scruggs showed plenty of power with 21 home runs at New Orleans. The team is also hopeful that Derek Dietrich and Chris Johnson, who filled in mostly at first base since Bour's injury, will bounce back.
"I know Mike is always trying to add on and do things, but it's always within a structure," Mattingly said. "That's just who we are. That's what I plan on."
