Rojas exits with right hip tightness, day to day

August 1st, 2019

MIAMI -- Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas left Thursday afternoon's game after three innings with right hip tightness sustained while running the bases.

Rojas watched from the dugout as his team rallied with a three-run ninth to tie the game before left fielder Harold Ramirez hit a walk-off homer in the 12th inning to end the four-hour, 14 minute game and lead the Marlins to a 5-4 victory at Marlins Park.

After hitting a single in the third inning off Twins right-hander Michael Pineda, Rojas was heading back to first base to potentially tag up after a Brian Anderson flyout when he felt the tightness.

"In the popup that [Anderson] hit to center field, trying to come back to the base and trying to tag up to second base," Rojas said. "And something grabbed on my hamstring, I thought it was my hamstring. After, when [Neil] Walker hit the double, I didn't want to run 100 percent in case it was my hamstring."

On Neil Walker's double to right field, Rojas appeared to pull up running from first to third, which is when it became evident that something was wrong. During Minnesota's mound visit, Rojas stepped into the dugout and was checked by the Marlins' training staff. He stayed in the game for the final out of the inning, but he didn't return to start the top of the fourth.

However, it doesn’t seem to be too serious. After being taken out, Rojas did a couple rounds of treatment and said he felt better.

"Hopefully tomorrow’s day [off] is going to help me,” Rojas said. “It was just my hip tightened up on me. But nothing to worry about. I feel like I'm going to be fine and hopefully will be back in the lineup for the Tampa series."

Marlins manager Don Mattingly echoed this statement.

"I think he’s OK," said Mattingly. "We think with the day off tomorrow that he'll be good in Tampa. Said he got better, got a little bit of treatment."

Yadiel Rivera replaced Rojas at shortstop at the top of the fourth.

Rojas went 1-for-2 and extended his hitting streak to nine games. He's batting .290 with four homers and 33 RBIs. Rojas has been an anchor in the field and a reliable bat for Miami.
