MIAMI – The Miami Marlins announced today that the club has reached agreement with shortstop Miguel Rojas on a two-year contract through 2021, with an option for 2022.

Rojas, 30, is batting .285 (127x446) with 27 doubles, a triple, five home runs, and 45 RBI this season, while playing to a .977 fielding percentage in 116 games (114 starts) at shortstop. When playing shortstop this season, his .286 batting average ranks sixth in the National League, while his 27 doubles rank tied for eighth and his .335 on-base percentage ranks fourth.

A native of Los Teques, Venezuela, Rojas has already set a career high in hits (127) this season despite playing only 122 games. He is just eight RBI shy of tying his career high of 53, which was set last season.

Rojas has earned numerous off-the-field honors during his career. His character and professionalism have been recognized by the South Florida Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America in three consecutive seasons, with two Charlie Hough Good Guy Awards (2017, 2019) and the Mr. Marlin Award (2018). Rojas was also this year’s Miami Marlins recipient of the Heart and Hustle Award, presented annually by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association to a player on each club who displays strong passion, desire, and work ethic on and off the field.

He has been one of the most versatile players in Club history during his tenure. In addition to 341 games at shortstop, he has played 98 at first base, 79 at third base, and 70 at second base, committing just three errors in 952.0 innings at positions other than shortstop. That versatility extends to his offense, as he has found success up and down the lineup for Miami. He ranks eighth in the NL in batting average among leadoff hitters this season (.286), just two years after ranking third in the Majors (second in NL) in average when batting in the eighth spot (.292).

Last Tuesday at Arizona, he set a single-game career high with six RBI in a game, and in the process became just the second shortstop since 1900 to record three doubles and at least six RBI in a game, joining Ozzie Smith on June 17, 1993, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Rojas was acquired by the Marlins in December, 2014 in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has played the fifth-most games at shortstop (341) in Club history and has the third-highest career batting average (.274) at the position (min. 1,100 AB). His .979 fielding percentage is the highest in Club history among shortstops with at least 300 games played.
