Familia's son born while closer locked down save

NEW YORK -- As Jeurys Familia worked in the ninth inning Friday night, loading the bases full of Braves with one out, his mind was almost certainly elsewhere. Familia's fiancée, Bianca Rivas, was at a hospital in Hackensack, N.J., giving birth to the couple's first child.

With one out and the bases loaded, the Mets say, Rivas gave birth to Jeurys Familia Jr. Moments later, the elder Familia induced a game-ending double play, then bolted from the stadium to join Rivas at the hospital.

A day later, the Mets had no plans to place Familia on the paternity list, which requires a one- to three-day absence. But Familia, who threw 39 pitches combined on Thursday and Friday, was not necessarily available for a save situation Saturday. Manager Terry Collins said he planned to mix and match in the ninth inning, with Bobby Parnell and lefty Sean Gilmartin serving as options.

Familia became the second Mets player to welcome a child this week. On Thursday, infielder Ruben Tejada's girlfriend gave birth to the couple's first daughter, Smarjorie Thalia Tejada. Tejada is due back from paternity leave Sunday.
