Astros mourn the passing of Corporan's son

The 16-month-old son of Astros catcher Carlos Corporan died on Friday after a lifelong battle with heart problems.

Carlos Corporan Jr. had undergone four heart surgeries since his June 2011 birth to Carlos Corporan and his wife Stephanie.

"We send our deepest sympathies to Carlos and Stephanie Corporan and to their families and friends in this extremely difficult time," the Astros said in a statement released Saturday. "Their son, Carlos Jr., battled valiantly through serious health issues since his birth and served as an inspiration to so many of us. The entire Astros family is in mourning over the passing of this brave, young child. Our hearts and prayers are with the Corporans."

Carlos Corporan, 28, is from Puerto Rico and still makes his home there. He appeared in 27 games for the Astros and 68 for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.

Information on funeral arrangements will be released in the coming days.
