Henderson Alvarez Named to National League All-Star Team

Marlins Hurler Replaces Jordan Zimmermann on Active Roster

National League All-Star manager Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals announced today, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, that Miami Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez will replace Jordan Zimmermann of the Washington Nationals on the N.L.'s active roster for the 85th All-Star Game.

Zimmermann, a two-time All-Star who was selected this year by Matheny, will be inactive in the All-Star Game. Alvarez, 24, is a first-time All-Star. In 19 starts, the Venezuela native has fired three shutouts en route to posting a 6-4 record and a 2.63 ERA in 120.0 innings (129 H, 22 BB, 73 SO). Alvarez closed the 2013 regular season with a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers. The fourth-year Major Leaguer joins teammate Giancarlo Stanton on the N.L.'s active roster.

The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15th. The 85th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International's independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network, MLB.com and Sirius XM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
