Steve Cishek of the Miami Marlins and Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets named Co-National League Players of the Week

Miami Marlins reliever Steve Cishek and New York Mets starter Jacob deGrom have been named co-National League Players of the Week for the period ending July 27th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In five appearances last week, Cishek converted a Major League-best five save opportunities. The 28-year-old right-hander fanned eight in 5.0 innings of work and allowed just two hits while tying for the Major League lead in pitching appearances. Cishek collected three consecutive saves in Miami's three-game sweep at Atlanta, July 21st-23rd. The Massachusetts native worked a scoreless 10th frame in Monday's contest, retiring the Braves on a fly out followed by a pair of swinging strikeouts, to earn the save in a 3-1 victory at Turner Field. On Tuesday, Cishek allowed a leadoff single to Chris Johnson before retiring the side for his 23rd save of the season in a 6-5 victory. He slammed the door in a 3-2 win in Wednesday's series finale, retiring the Braves in order for his third save in as many days. Cishek also earned the save in Friday's series-opener at Houston, fanning a pair in a 2-0 victory at Minute Maid Park. He retired the side in order for his 25th save of the season after taking over for Brad Hand and Bryan Morris, who had combined for 8.0 scoreless innings. It marked the second straight season in which he has reached the 25-save threshold after recording a career-high 34 saves in 2013. Cishek closed out the week with yet another save on Sunday, preserving a 4-2 Marlins victory over Houston. This is Cishek's second career Player of the Week Award, having won previously for the week of July 22-28, 2013, during which he also posted a five-save week.

Jacob deGrom tied for the N.L. lead in wins and innings pitched last week, going 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA (1 ER/13.1 IP), 11 strikeouts and three walks over two outings. The rookie right-hander earned the win in a 3-1 victory on July 22nd at Seattle after allowing just one run on five hits in 7.0 innings of work with seven strikeouts. It marked his third consecutive start in which he had tossed at least 7.0 innings while allowing no more than one run, joining Jerry Koosman (4/11-23, 1968) as just the second rookie pitcher in Mets history to post a three-game streak of that kind (Elias Sports Bureau). On Sunday, deGrom bested the N.L. Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers for his fifth victory of the season to improve to 5-5 on the year. The Stetson University product held the Brewers lineup scoreless through 6.1 innings of work to help the Mets earn a split of their four-game series at Miller Park. He fanned four and walked two in the victory. The 26-year-old currently ranks first among N.L. rookies with 87.0 innings pitched and 83 strikeouts. This is his first weekly award.

Other noteworthy performances last week included deGrom's New York teammate Lucas Duda (.280, 7 H, 4 HR, 7 RBI, .760 SLG); Cishek's Miami teammate Christian Yelich (.370, 7 R, 10 H, 2 SB, .485 OBP); Adrian Gonzalez (.435, 10 H, 4 2B, 7 RBI, .739 SLG) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; and Colorado's Nolan Arenado (.318, 6 R, 7 H, 3 HR, 7 RBI, .773 SLG) and D.J. LeMahieu (.478, 11 H, 2 3B, .500 OBP).
