Lyles plays catch, receives treatment; Williams, Kela 'making progress'

CINCINNATI -- Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk provided his weekly update Wednesday morning, detailing the health status of the many players who are either currently on the injured list or working through ailments on a day to day basis.

The rundown:

• Right-hander , who was removed from his start Tuesday in Cincinnati with left hamstring discomfort, played catch Wednesday morning and received treatment from the athletic training staff.

Lyles said he is able to walk without any pain, but he'll know more when he throws a normal side session on Thursday.

"Everything's fine walking, but it'll be getting off the slope that will be a better test," he said.

• Right-hander Trevor Williams, who has been on the IL since May 17 with a right side strain, threw off the mound Wednesday and is "making progress," Tomczyk said. "We're very encouraged, 13 days post-injury, that he's throwing off the slope. The staff's trying to be creative in ways to get him reps to what he's going to be used to doing in the game."

• Right-hander , sidelined since May 6 with right shoulder inflammation, threw in a rehab outing for Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, allowing three runs in one inning. Tomczyk said the next step for Kela will be to throw a side session in Pittsburgh when the team returns home.

"He's making good progress," Tomczyk said of Kela. "We want to put him in the most successful position for when his name is called in the bullpen. There's no reservations from the staff or Keone's position."

• Left fielder (right posterior shoulder strain) is rehabbing in Indianapolis and was scheduled to play in his third game for the Triple-A club on Wednesday. Early responses have been very positive, Tomczyk said, as Dickerson has been throwing the ball without reservations or restrictions while he works his way back into game shape.

• Catcher (concussion symptoms) did not make the trip to Cincinnati. He'll be reevaluated upon the team's return to Pittsburgh. Cervelli is on the seven-day injured list, per standard concussion protocol.
