After spending the summer of 1992 with the U.S. Olympic Team in Barcelona, Spain, made his pro debut at Triple-A Tucson and hit .400 with 29 RBI in August...was selected by the Houston Astros with the first overall pick in the 1992 Free Agent Amateur draft after an All-American career at Cal State-Fullerton...among the players who followed Nevin in the first round of the '92 draft were Derek Jeter (6th overall pick by New York), Jason Kendall (23rd overall by Pittsburgh) and Charles Johnson (28th overall by Florida).
