Veteran hurler returned to SF over winter and started strong, but saw season derailed because of injuries...was placed on 15-day Disabled List May 23-June 6 with cervical strain (bulging disc in neck)...after brief return, landed back on DL with same injury July 1 (retro to June 8)...was transferred to 60-day DL July 22, and missed remainder of season...underwent right shoulder surgery Aug. 23, procedure performed by Dr. Ken Akizuki...began year pitching great baseball, serving as Giants' closer when Armando Benitez began season on DL...went 6-for-6 in save opportunities and notched one victory in 1st 7 outings, recording tremendous 1.23 ERA (1er, 7.1ip)...however, yielded 11.08 ERA (16er, 13.0ip) while pitching through pain in his final 16 appearances.

Had solid season for Cubs after starting year with Baltimore...posted 3-4 record with 3 saves and 2.47 ERA in 54 appearances for Chicago...recorded 1st save of season July 9 vs. White Sox, tossing final inning of 9-6 victory...was 1st save since July 18, 1997 while with San Diego...started season with Baltimore, going 2-2 with 7.36 ERA in 5 games for Orioles...was released May 1 and signed minor league deal with Chicago May 8...made 6 relief appearances for triple-A Iowa before having contract purchased by Cubs May 27.

Made 53 relief appearances for Oakland, going 2-2 with 4.15 ERA...ranked 3rd on club in appearances, despite stint on DL July 20-Aug. 8 with strained left rib cage.

Pitched for Detroit, Cleveland and Oakland during campaign, posting 2-7 overall mark with 5.24 ERA in 43 games (9 starts)...began season in Tigers starting rotation, going 2-6 with 6.61 ERA in 9 starts before being sent to bullpen...made 6 relief appearances for Detroit prior to being traded to Cleveland June 24...made just 3 appearances out of bullpen before being traded to Oakland July 12.
