He and his wife, Kristin, have two sons, James "Tucker" and McKade, and reside in Irmo, SC...Graduated in 1992 from Forest High School in Ocala, Fla., where he was an all-area selection his junior and senior years and the Ocala-area Player of The Year following his senior season...Went on to Florida State University, posting a 10-1 record with a 1.68 ERA as a freshman and earning ACC Rookie of the Year and *Baseball America* Freshman of the Year awards...Named to the All-ACC Second Team and All-America Third Team the following season when he went 12-1 with a 3.17 ERA...Also pitched for Team USA in 1994...Earned first team All-American and second team All-ACC honors in 1995, going 12-3 in 19 starts with a 2.89 ERA and 130 strikeouts in 134.0 innings...Led his team to its first ever ACC Championship, and to wins over Old Dominion in the Atlantic I Regional NCAA Tournament and Oklahoma in the College World Series...Ended his three-year career with the Seminoles with a 34-5 record with a 2.63 ERA in 57 games (52 starts)...Struck out 391 batters in 363.1 innings, the fifth-highest strikeout total in ACC history...Named to the ACC 50th Anniversary team in 2002...Teamed with fellow prospect R.A Dickey to form "Honoring Thy Father," a non-profit organization designed to impact school, athletic, and church groups.
2006
Joined Richmond (AAA) on 5/29 as free agent. Had not played organized ball since 2003...Went 2-2 with a 2.00 ERA in 20 relief appearances and went 0-1 with a 6.89 ERA in three starts...Held right-handed hitters to a .206 average; left-handed hitters hit .268 off Johnson...Had his best month in August, going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in eight games (2 ER/12.2 IP) and allowing just a .191 opponents' batting average...Worked four scoreless innings 6/18 vs. PAW and 6/22 at IND when he picked up his second win...Worked 6.1 scoreless vs. CHA in his second of three starts on 6/30...Had scoreless streak of 15.1 innings pitched snapped on 7/5 vs. OTT...Fanned a season-high five batters in two scoreless innings on 8/19 at IND.
2003
Made three starts for Houston, going 0-for-1 with a 5.87 ERA (10 ER/15.1 IP)...Designated for assignment on 6/16...Lasted three innings in his last start on 6/13 at BOS, allowing three runs on four hits...Made his second start on 6/7 vs. TB and fanned a career high-tying four batters over 5.2 IP...Contract was purchased from New Orleans (AAA), where he was 5-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 13 games before retiring on 7/3...Tossed 6.1 scoreless innings at Spring Training with the Astros.
2002
Went 1-2 with a 4.11 ERA (7 ER/15.1 IP) in 16 games for San Diego...Also spent time with Triple-A Portland, Triple-A Tucson, and Double-A El Paso...Signed by San Diego as a minor league free agent on 7/18 after being released by Arizona on 6/30...contract purchased by Padres on 8/17 from Portland...Suffered loss in 5-0, 11-inning loss against Houston on 9/4...Recorded no decisions, one save and a 2.41 ERA (5 ER/18.1 IP) in 12 games for Portland...Was 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA (7 ER/11.1 IP) in three games (one start) with El Paso...Went 0-3 with a 9.41 ERA (38 ER/36.1 IP) in 14 games (five starts) for Tucson.
2001
Spent the first month of the season of the Texas Rangers big league staff and recorded a 9.58 ERA (11 ER/10.1 IP) in five appearances...Contract was purchased by Arizona on 4/27...Made 15 appearances (12 starts) and finished 4-4 with a 5.25 ERA (43 ER/73.2 IP) for Tucson...Placed on the disabled list on 7/21 for the remained of the season with a torn ligament in his right index finger.
2000
Split time between Triple-A Oklahoma and Texas...was 1-1 with a 6.21 ERA (20ER/29IP) in 15 appearances for the Rangers...Opened the season with Oklahoma, working predominantly out of the bullpen, where he tied for the team lead in saves, led in games finished and ranked third in appearances...He was initially called up on 6/6 and made his only appearance the following day, allowing two unearned runs in three innings...Sent back to Oklahoma on 6/9 until his second promotion on 8/1...Was optioned back to Oklahoma on 8/16, then recalled on 9/1...Defeated Chicago (AL) on the road on 9/5 for his first Major League win.
1999
Spent time with four clubs, including one appearance for the Rangers in which he allowed five earned runs in three innings (15.00 ERA)...Recalled on 7/24 and returned to Oklahoma on 8/1...Given a spot in the starting rotation with Oklahoma at the beginning of the season and delivered three wins in five starts from 4/20-5/11...Shoulder tendinitis shelved him on 5/13, followed by rehab assignments at Gulf Coast and Tulsa...Suffered a loss in his return on 7/10 and was relegated to the bullpen through the season's end.
1998
Made his first Major league appearance on 9/26 in a start for Texas...Allowed four runs in 4.1 innings and received a no-decision...Was 6-6 with a 4.90 ERA (61 ER/112 IP) at Triple-A Oklahoma...After experiencing discomfort in his first outing on 4/11 for Oklahoma, a herniated disc landed him on the disabled list on 4/21, although he avoided surgery...Made three rehab starts at Port Charlotte (A) before being activated on 6/1 by Oklahoma.
1997
Split the season between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma...Was 5-4 with a 3.52 ERA (28 ER/71.2 IP) and four complete games in 10 starts for Tulsa...Was 1-8 with a 7.29 ERA (47 ER/58 IP) in 13 games (12 starts) for Oklahoma...Battled back problems that sidelined him for the first two weeks of action with Oklahoma...Went 1-8 in nine starts leading up to his demotion to Tulsa on 6/19...Earned Texas League Player of the Week honors for 6/16-22...Tossed three straight complete games from 7/23-8/2...He made five starts for Zulia in winter ball in Venezuela.
1996
Spent the season as a starter for Tulsa (AA), pacing the Texas League in wins and complete games while finishing third in innings and eighth in ERA...He pitched in the Double-A and Texas League All-Star games...Notched Pitcher of the Week honors three times, 4/4-14, 7/21-27 and 8/19-25...His Triple-A debut came in a spot start on 7/23 for Oklahoma tossing a complete game, two-hit shutout against Louisville...Returned to Tulsa following the game...Earned a spot on the Texas League postseason All-Star team.
