Bartolome Araujo Fortunato played in the Dominican Summer League from 1997-1999...Was signed by Tampa Bay as an outfielder and was converted to a pitcher in 1999 when he went 7-0 with a 2.57 ERA in 13 games (five starts) for the Devil Rays entry in the Dominican Summer League.
2005
After showing promise late in the 2004 season -- 20 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings in 15 games -- Fortunato spent the entire 2005 campaign assigned to the disabled list after suffering a herniated disc the last days of Spring Training. He underwent surgery to correct the problem.

Averaged 9.64 strikeouts per nine innings with the Mets...Had 20 strikeouts in his 18.2 innings of work...Notched his first major league win on September 22nd at Montreal in a 3-2 victory...Hurled 2.0 scoreless frames with two strikeouts...Recorded his first major league save on August 21st at San Francisco, working a scoreless inning with one strikeout in an 11-9, 12-inning victory...Tossed 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts on September 9th at Florida to pick up his first hold with the Mets...Also had a hold on September 11th vs. Philadelphia...Made his Mets debut with 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts on August 20th at San Francisco...Recalled from Norfolk (AAA) of the International League on August 19th...Was acquired along with righthanded pitcher Victor Zambrano on July 30th from Tampa Bay in exchange for lefthanded pitcher Scott Kazmir and minor league righthanded pitcher Joselo Diaz...Went 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA in six relief appearances at Norfolk (AAA)...In 5.1 innings, he allowed four hits, two runs, earned, with three walks and five strikeouts...With Tampa Bay, he was 0-0 with a 3.68 ERA in three games...In 7.1 innings, he permitted 10 hits, three runs, one earned, with two walks and five strikeouts...Tossed a career-high 3.0 innings on July 1st with the Devil Rays vs. Toronto...Also had a career-high four strikeouts in th contest...At Durham (AAA) of the International League, he was 4-3 with a 2.42 ERA and nine saves in 34 games...In 44.2 innings, he permitted 28 hits, 14 runs, 12 earned, with 21 walks and 54 strikeouts...In six professional seasons, he has 434 strikeouts in 396.2 innings (9.85 strikeouts per nine innings)...Went 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA in three games for Gigantes in the Dominican Winter League...In 1.1 inning, he allowed two hits, two runs, earned, with five walks and no strikeouts.

Spent the bulk of the season at AA Orlando, but did pitch in 5 games (4 starts) over a mid-season tour with AAA Durham...Combined on the two stops, pitched to a 3.13 ERA in 40 games (5 starts), striking out 83 in 74.2 innings...held opponents to a .228 avg. (63-276), including a .200 mark to lefties (22-110)...In five professional seasons he owns 350 strikeouts in 320.2 innings...Had a 17-outing stretch from April 27 through June 25 in which he pitched to a 1.08 ERA (25- IP, 18-H, 3-ER, 29-SO) lowering his ERA from a season-high 4.61 to a season-low 2.33...Selected to play in the Southern League All-Star Game, but was promoted to Durham on July 1....Allowed 3 earned runs or less in each of his 4 starts with Durham...pitched a season-high 6.0 innings in a no decision July 25 vs. Indianapolis (Brewers)...Had two trips to the disabled list: May 30 to June 6 (oblique strain) and July 31 to Aug. 10 (blister on right middle finger)...Added to the 40-man roster on Nov. 20.
2002
His first professional season he set a Rays organization record with a 2.26 ERA (he eclipsed it in 2003)...it also ranked 2nd in the South Atlantic League and 10th in all of minor league baseball...Struck out a career-high 12 batters in a 1-0 victory at Asheville on July 18, his final win of the season (7-IP, 2-H). with LH Jon Switzer when Al Levine was traded to Kansas City.
