Ljay Newsome #74

Born in La Plata, Md., which is roughly 30 miles south of Alexandria, VA. La Plata was founded in the1870’s as the Pennsylvania Railroad was granted aright of way to build its tracks and station. Graduated from Chopticon (MD) High School in 2015 and was selected in the draft that year by Seattle. Helped lead Chopticon to a Maryland 3A State Championship as a senior.

2022

Began the season on the injured list recovering from Tommy John surgery that he had in summer of 2021... Made his season debut with the Rookie FCL Cardinals on July 5 and made 11 appearances across three levels on his road back. 

2020

Was 0-1, 5.17 ERA (9 ER, 15.2 IP) in 5 G, 4 GS, with Seattle…walked one, struck out nine...Selected to Seattle on Aug. 15...Made MLB debut in relief Aug. 20 vs. LAD, allowing 1 run (3 H, 1 SO)...Recorded no decision in first ML start Aug. 27 at SD; allowed one run on three hits and season-high four strikeouts (0 BB)…left game with a 3-1 lead, but team lost 10-7...Allowed only one walk over 15.2 innings, including beginning career tossing 8.1 innings without issuing a walk…tossed 6.1 innings without a walk to end the season.

2019

Spent most of the year with High-A Modesto (4/4-6/22 & 6/25-7/14)…made one start with Triple-A Tacoma (6/23), nine starts with Double-A Arkansas (7/15-end)…went 9-10, 3.54 (61 ER, 155.0 IP) with 169 strikeouts and 17 walks in 28 combined starts…Cal League Northern Division All-Star…earned the win for the North Division after allowing one hit and striking out two...tossed 20.0 scoreless innings over four starts, Aug. 2-17…ranked 8th in the Cal League with 124 strikeouts...Cal League Post-Season All-Star.

2018

Spent majority of year in Modesto (26 starts), where he was 6-10 with a 4.87 ERA (75 ER, 138.2 IP) with 123 strikeouts and just 13 walks...made one start for Tacoma...among Cal League leaders, was T4th in WHIP (1.31), 6th in strikeouts (123) and T6th in IP (138.2).

2017

Went 8-9 with a 4.10 ERA (59 ER, 129.2 IP) in 25 starts with A Clinton……walked 16 and struck out 111…ranked among Midwest League leaders in WHIP (4th, 1.13), starts (T6th, 25), ERA (12th, 4.10), innings pitched (13th, 129.2 IP), strikeouts (14th, 111) and wins (T18th, 8)…recorded 9 quality starts…recorded win in 4 consecutive starts, April 4-27, going 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA (5 ER, 22.0 IP).
