Full name is Joshua Wayne Simpson...Selected by Miami out of Columbia University in New York, N.Y., where he earned Second Team All-Ivy honors in 2019...He also helped the Lions to a pair of postseason appearances in 2017 and 2019 and was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week once and Pitcher of the Week twice...Became the first Columbia pitcher to toss a complete-game, nine-inning shutout on March 23, 2019 against Cornell. His major was in political science.

2024

In two Spring Training games for the Marlins, allowed four runs on three hits with two hit batters and three walks in 1.2 innings...Was placed on the 15-day IL with left elbow ulnar neuritis on March 28, missing the Opening Day roster...Made one appearance at Single-A Jupiter to begin a rehab assignment. Struck out one in 1.0 scoreless frame...Was then moved to the 60-day IL on April 20 and did not see game action again until Aug. 6...Allowed one hit and three walks with three strikeouts in two scoreless appearances (2.0 IP) with Single-A Jupiter to begin his rehab assignment on Aug. 6 and Aug. 10...Was moved to Double-A Pensacola where he allowed four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings (10.80 ERA) with three walks and four strikeouts...Finished the campaign at Triple-A Jacksonville, going 0-1 with a 6.52 ERA (7 ER/9.2 IP), four walks and 15 strikeouts in nine relief appearances. Hitters went 12-for-42 (.286) against him...On Nov. 4, was sent outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.

2023

Posted a 5.06 ERA (4 ER/5.1 IP) in six games during his first Major League Spring Training...Was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on March 20...In 25 appearances with Triple-A Jacksonville, went 1-1 with a 4.19 ERA (16 ER/34.1 IP), surrendering four homers and striking out 59 batters against 16 walks...Was placed on the 7-day Minor League injured list on May 9 and did not return to action until July 8...In a rehab stint with Single-A Jupiter, allowed three runs on three hits in 4.1 innings...Was returned to Jacksonville on July 22...Was recalled by Miami on Sept. 12 but did not see game action before being optioned back to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sept. 17...Did not allow an earned run in his final seven appearances of the season (Aug. 24-Sept. 23), striking out 21 batters in 10.1 innings pitched with five walks and three unearned runs.

2022

Earned MiLB.com Organizational All-Star honors in 2022 after a breakout season between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Jacksonville...Combined to go 7-2 with a 3.97 ERA (68.0 IP/30 ER) in 50 appearances...Did not allow a run in his first 14 appearances to start the year with the Blue Wahoos (18.2 innings). Held batters to a .070 avg. (4x57) during this stretch with seven walks and 35 strikeouts.... Recorded a season-high seven strikeouts April 16 at Rocket City across 2.2 scoreless innings...Limited lefties to a .147 avg. (15-for-102), four doubles and two home runs, while righties hit .200 (26x130). Overall, held hitters to a .177 avg. and .588 OPS with 16 extra-base hits.
