In his first major league season was 5-3 with an ERA of 3.27 in 60 games which led all AL rookies...Selected as the Blue Jays Rookie of the Year by the Toronto Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association...Was second in the AL in percentage of double plays induced at 26.0% (15-50)... Opened the season in Tennessee of the Southern League (AA) and was recalled on April 12 after three games in which he was 0-0 with a save and a 3.00 ERA...Won his ML debut on April 14 vs KC after retiring the only batter he faced...Then lost his second game on April 19 vs the Yankees in a 17.0 inning game which saw him allow one run over 4.0 innings...Was optioned to Syracuse of the International League (AAA) on April 18 where he appeared in two games and was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA before being recalled to Toronto...Upon return posted a 1.72 ERA in May and 1.13 mark in June...From May 20 to June 28 allowed one run and seven hits over 16 outings and posted an ERA of 0.43 (1ER/20.2IP)...Stranded the first 12 inherited runners over seven outings...First inherited run allowed was June 18 at Baltimore...At the All-Star break was 3-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 28 games...Did not allow a home run in his first 42.0 innings until July 13 at Philadelphia when Rolen homered, which resulted in a blown save...Was then ejected from that game after hitting the next batter Travis Lee...From July 13 to July 28 appeared in eight games and was 0-1 with an ERA of 6.97 ERA (8ER/10.1IP) and allowed three home runs...Finished July 0-1 with a 6.06 ERA...In August was 0-0 with a 3.09 ERA after eight of ten outings were scoreless...Saw his record even out to 3-3 after a loss on September 20 at Baltimore...Posted wins on September 24 at Cleveland and October 5 vs Cleveland (Gm #2) to finish 5-3...Stranded 35 of 44 inherited runners and had six holds...Held opponents to a .220 batting average with left-handed batters at .242 and right-handed batters at .207...Walked 29 batters, of which eight were intentional, and struck out 38.
2000
Split the season between Tennessee of the Southern League (AA) and Syracuse of the International League (AAA)... On the season was 6-3 with 28 saves in 56 games while posting a 2.33 ERA... Opened the season with Tennessee where he was 4-3 with 20 saves in 36 games with a 3.12 ERA... In 34.2 innings he recorded 40 strikeouts and held opponents to a .215 average... Had a 1.17 ERA in eight April games with six saves... On May 5 vs Greenville suffered first loss after being charged with four ER without recording an out... Was one of two occasions all season that he allowed more that one earned run in a game... In June was 1-1 with four saves and a 1.17 ERA in eight games... On July 15 vs Greenville pitched a season high 2.0 innings and allowed a solo HR, his first allowed all season... Pitched one inning or less in 31 of his 36 games... In Tennessee was 3-2 with eight saves with a 5.40 ERA in 17 games and on the road was 1-1 with 12 saves in 19 games with a 1.37 ERA... Was called up to Syracuse on July 28 and debuted with a scoreless inning on July 30 vs Indianapolis... After allowing an earned run on July 31 he posted 14 consecutive scoreless games from August 2 to August 26... From August 18 to September 2, he recorded saves in eight of nine games to finish the season. With Syracuse was 2-0 with eight saves and a 0.93 ERA in 20 games... Following the season pitched for Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League and was 2-1 with five saves and a 3.38 ERA in 15 games... Was selected to the 2000 Arizona Fall League All-Prospect Team as one of two right-handed relievers.
1999
With Dunedin of the Florida State League was All-Star selection after posting a 4-1 record with 26 saves and a 1.70 ERA in 47 games... Led league in relief points (84), was second in league and fifth in all minor leagues among relievers in the opponents average allowed at .165... Was third in league among relievers in runners per 9.0IP at 8.15... Was fourth in league and second in the organization in saves (26), fourth in league in games finished (42)... Did not allow an earned run in first 13 appearances over 13.1 innings, allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out 15 to pick up eight saves... Closed season by allowing just one earned run in last 13 appearances spanning 14.2 innings and was 1-0 with nine saves... On the road was 1-0, with a 1.04 ERA and 12 saves... Right-handed hitters batted .134 (16-119)... With runners in scoring posi-tion opponents hit just .115 (6-52)... Pitched for Rancho Cucamonga, California Fall League, compiling 1-0 record with a 3.45 ERA and three saves in 14 games.
1998
Made his pro debut with Medicine Hat and led Pioneer League (A) in saves (16), relief points (50), games finished (26) and was second in games (28)... Led league relievers in baserunners per 9.0IP ratio at 8.72 and placed third in walks per 9.0IP at 1.40... Did not allow an earned run in first 17 appearances, was 1-0 with nine saves... Allowed earned runs in only three of 28 appear-ances... Did not allow more than two runs, earned or un-earned, in any outing... Held opponents to batting average of .211.
