Grew up in Elk Grove, which is a city in Sacramento County, located just south of the state capital of Sacramento. Davis has worked out with Logan Webb in the offseason since they both spend parts of the offseason in the area...During his down time, he enjoys playing video games, visiting zoos, museums and aquariums. His game of choice is Call of Duty...His full name is Jonathan Gregory Davis. He has gone by J.D. since he was in elementary school. The "D" in J.D. stands for Davis. He says he does not go by J.G. because "it doesn't flow quite as well." When he was in school, he listed J.D. as his full name on tests until his teacher asked him to write Davis as well to keep track while grading papers...His pregame ritual includes eating a grilled cheese sandwich before every game, but he does not see himself as superstitious. Attended Cal State Fullerton where he was named to the All-Big West First Team in his sophomore and junior years. In his junior year, led the Titans in batting average (.338), OBP (.419) and slugging (.523). He was a closer in college and posted seven saves in 14 relief appearances putting up a 2.66 ERA...Was a four-year letter winner at Elk Grove (CA) High School and was a two-time high school All-American and was named the NorCal Player of the Year in both his junior and senior years...Also was an all-league football player at Elk Grove in 2008...While with the Mets he was honored as a recipient of the Thurman Munson Award on Feb. 4, 2020 for contributions on and off the field in New York. He also taught fire safety to children in conjunction with the FDNY in 2019...Selected in the fifth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft by Tampa Bay. Davis elected to attend Cal State Fullerton instead.
