His 2015 season debut was delayed by back surgery...His father, Joe Sr., played college baseball for the University of South Carolina. His brother, Jake, also played for Virginia and was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2018 draft...Originally selected by Tampa Bay in the fifth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Virginia...Acquired by San Francisco at the Trade Deadline on July 31, 2019, from Tampa in exchange for LHP Jacob Lopez.
Made his first career Opening Day roster and appeared in four games (three starts) going 0-for-10 before being optioned to the Giants' Alternate Training Site on July 30...Made his Major League debut July 23 at Dodger Stadium, starting in right field and going 0-for-4...Was designated for assignment on Aug. 20 as the Giants called up top prospect Joey Bart...cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A on Aug. 27.
On July 31, the Rays traded McCarthy to the Giants in exchange for minor league LHP Jacob Lopez...McCarthy was assigned to Triple-A Sacramento and hit .165 with a homer and four RBI in 79 at-bats.
