Ryan has faced adversity his entire life…growing up in Culver City near Los Angeles often left him “terrified”…grisly violence was visible around him, including gang warfare and their encounters with law enforcement…his father dealt with drug, alcohol and gambling problems, leading to erratic and sometimes borderline abusive behavior before passing away in 2012 from blood cancer…Ryan only recently began discussing his background openly...His maternal grandparents, Helen and Seymour Wildfeuer, were Polish Holocaust survivors… Helen was imprisoned at Auschwitz and Seymour was in Bergen-Belsen…he learned of it after discovering the number tattooed on his grandmother’s arm…Ryan enthusiastically accepted the offer to pitch for Israel in the qualifying rounds for the 2017 World Baseball Classic...In spring 2017, his Cardinals teammates chipped in and paid for a rental car for Ryan after learning that he walked a mile back and forth to the field from his rental condo…Ryan declined when initially approached about it, so the clubhouse arranged it as a surprise...Ryan faced Kevin Kiermaier during Players’ Weekend in 2017…the encounter gained traction on social media, as the two nicknames selected resulted in a “Sherriff” vs. “Outlaw” matchup… Kiermaier reached on a fielder’s choice.
