Spent most of the 2001 season rehabilitating his right shoulder
following "Tommy John" surgery...was one of seven players who made
eight appearances on the club's 60-day disabled list (LHP Justin
Atchley, RHP Seth Etherton, RHP Pete Harnisch, SS Barry Larkin, C
Kelly Stinnett, RHP John Riedling twice)...appeared in the Reds'
first two games of the season, the 10-4 loss vs Atlanta on Opening
Day (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) and the 3-2 victory vs Pittsburgh on 4/3
(0.1 IP, 1 BB), then on 4/4 went on the 60-day disabled list with a
torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow...on 4/12 had
reconstructive surgery to repair that ligament, using a tendon from
his left hamstring...the three-hour procedure was performed by Dr.
James Andrews and Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek...began
throwing on 8/17, when he made ten throws from 30 feet and 25 throws
from 45 feet...on 10/11 was reinstated from the 60-day disabled
list.
2000
In his second Major League season went 5-8, 3.29 in 10 starts and 38
relief apps...led the club with a career-high 136 strikeouts...also
had a career-high 112ip...from 8/28-9/7 was on the 15-day disabled
list with a strained lower back...was scratched from his scheduled
start on 8/28 at Atl because of the injury...in his last 3gs prior
to his stint on the DL went 1-0, 1.29...after he came off the DL
made just 1 more appearance, started the 7-1 loss on 9/8/g1 at Pit
(3.2ip, 6h, 4r, 3er, 4bb, 1k), before he suffered 2 broken toes on
his right foot in an accident at home on 9/11...did not go on the DL
with the toe injuries but did not pitch again the rest of the
season...ranked second in the Major Leagues with a club-record 21
wild pitches (SD's Matt Clement, 23wp) and contributed to the
pitching staff's Major League-record 96 wild pitches...he broke the
club's wild pitch record previously set by Jim Maloney in 1963
(19wp, 250.1ip) and then tied by Maloney in 1965 (19wp,
255.1ip)...Williamson set the record in his first 100ip...made his
first 38 apps in relief (2-5-6, 3.65) and his last 10 apps as a

was the victim of blown saves...was a victim of Scott Sullivan's

Was named National League winner of the Jackie Robinson Rookie of
the Year Award in voting of the Baseball Writers Association of
America...was the only player named on all 32 ballots...was the
seventh Reds rookie to be honored by the BBWAA, joining Frank
Robinson (1956), Pete Rose (1963), Tommy Helms (1966), Johnny Bench
(1968), Pat Zachry (1976), and Chris Sabo (1988)...in voting by his
peers was named The Sporting News' National League Rookie Pitcher of
the Year...also earned a berth on the National League All-Star team
but did not pitch in the game at Fenway Park...established franchise
rookie records for relief victories (12) and relief losses (7), both
marks previously held by Wayne Granger (9-6, 1969)...his 12 wins
were the most by a Reds rookie righthander since 1976, when starter

batters to a .171 BA, third-best among all National League
pitchers...opponents hit .156 with RISP, fifth-best among NL

for all ML pitchers, and .118 when behind in the count, fourth-best
in the majors...his 5-game winning streak from 4/28-6/5 was the
second-longest this season by an NL rookie and at that time was the
longest by a Reds pitcher since John Smiley won 6 straight from 6/

Smoltz...in April/May was on Chattanooga's disabled list after a
