Derek Holland undergoes left knee surgery
Left-hander to miss start of 2014 regular season
Arlington, Texas-Texas Rangers left-handed pitcher Derek Holland underwent arthroscopic surgery this morning to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. The surgery was performed by Rangers Team Physician Dr. Keith Meister at Medical Center Arlington.
Holland sustained the injury in a fall at home on Tuesday morning. He will have limited activity for six weeks and is expected to miss the beginning of the 2014 regular season.
Holland was 10-9 with a 3.42 ERA in 33 starts for the Rangers in 2013, establishing career bests for ERA, starts, innings (213.0), and strikeouts (189). He led the staff in starts and innings and tied for second in wins. Holland is 49-38, 4.36 in 141 games/123 starts with Texas from 2009-13.
Holland issued the following quote today:
""I am devastated by this injury. It was a freak accident at home that resulted in a hard fall on my knee. As upsetting as this is, my goal is to begin rehab and get back on the mound as quickly as possible."
Holland was scheduled to appear at the Texas Rangers Caravan stop with the Frisco RoughRiders on Saturday at Dr Pepper Ballpark from 1:30-3:00 p.m. and will now be unable to attend. Shortstop Elvis Andrus has been added to the group that also includes pitchers Tanner Scheppers and Shawn Tolleson, outfielder Michael Choice, and former Rangers Steve Buechele and Mark McLemore.
