FAQ about Rangers' Cactus League schedule

February 22nd, 2019

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Rangers open their Cactus League schedule when they face the Royals at 2:05 p.m. CT on Saturday at Surprise Stadium. Ariel Jurado is scheduled to start for Texas.

Here are the frequently asked questions about Rangers' Spring Training games this year.

How many games are the Rangers scheduled to play?

They have 36 scheduled, including 33 in Arizona. They play 16 home games in Surprise and two against the Royals as the visiting team. They have one game on March 24 against their Triple-A team in Nashville and two against the Indians on March 25-26 at Globe Life Park.

What about split-squad doubleheaders?

The Rangers have three split-squads in Arizona. On March 3, they play the Padres in Surprise and the Dodgers in Glendale at 2:05 p.m. CT. On March 14, they play the Royals in Surprise and the Cubs in Mesa at 3:05. Then on March 21, they have the Indians in Surprise and the White Sox in Glendale at 3:05. The Rangers will also play a day-night doubleheader on March 11, facing the Angels during the day and the Royals at night in Surprise.

When do the Rangers break camp?

The last game in Arizona for the Major League team will be on March 23 against the Brewers. After that, they fly to Nashville to play the Sounds and then on to Arlington. Technically, the Rangers have a Cactus League game on March 24 against the Royals in addition to the game in Nashville. But they have permission to use only Minor Leaguers in that game even though it counts in the Cactus League standings and statistics.

Will fans be able to watch the games on TV or listen to them?

Yes, the Rangers have an extensive broadcast schedule with almost every game available either by webcast, radio or television. The only exceptions are the away games on the split-squad doubleheaders and the March 24 game against the Royals. Check daily with www.texasrangers.com.

What are the rules regarding how many regulars must play in a game?

Technically a team must have at least four “regular” players in the lineup that day, but it is loosely enforced, especially for split-squad games. The Rangers have a list of veteran players who are acceptable. Hunter Pence and Ben Revere are not projected regulars for the Rangers, but nobody is going to complain if they are in the lineup.

What is the pitching plan?

After Yohander Mendez starts Sunday, Mike Minor and Lance Lynn are scheduled to start Monday and Tuesday. The plan is for Minor and Lynn to throw two innings and 30 pitches and build up from there. Edinson Volquez, Drew Smyly and Shelby Miller will throw one more bullpen session before they are inserted into the rotation.

Who is unavailable right now?

Asdrubal Cabrera is getting extra work at third base and won’t play in games right away. Pence is sidelined with a sore right shoulder, and the Rangers aren’t sure when he’ll be ready to play. Infielders Chase d’Arnaud and Christian Lopes are also sidelined with strained oblique muscles. Outfielder Scott Heineman is recovering from left shoulder surgery and unlikely to play in any Cactus League games this spring.

What is a JIC?

That stands for a player who is not in Major League camp. He is brought over from Minor League camp and is in uniform “just in case” he is needed late in the game. There are always extra pitchers, but position players are brought over as well, especially for road games.
