The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon that the club has received right-handed pitcher Alfredo Figaro from Milwaukee on a waiver claim. To make room for Figaro, the Rangers have designated right-handed pitcher Wilmer Font for assignment.

Figaro, 30, spent the bulk of the 2014 season with Nashville (AAA), going 5-2 with 2 saves and a 3.71 ERA (29 ER/70.1 IP) in 42 games/2 starts. Over his final 24 outings at Triple-A beginning June 24, Figaro had a 2.08 ERA (8 ER/34.2 IP) while holding opponents to a .228 (29-127) average with 6 walks and 30 strikeouts. He also made 6 appearances over three stints with Milwaukee this season: April 21-23, June 25-28, and Aug. 30-end of season.

Figaro has a career 5-8 record with a 5.04 ERA (64 ER/114.1 IP) in 52 games/9 starts in the majors with Detroit (2009-10) and Milwaukee (2013-14). He spent two seasons with the Orix Buffaloes in the Japanese Pacific League in 2011-12. He established MLB career highs in most categories with the 2013 Brewers, including most games (33) and innings (74.0). In his minor league career, Figaro has averaged 7.2 strikeouts per 9 innings and just 0.4 home runs per 9 in 140 games/83 starts. He is a cousin of Seattle reliever Fernando Rodney.

The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Font to the minor leagues. He went 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA (12 ER/31.0 IP) in 29 relief appearances for Frisco (AA) before his season was ended due to surgery for a bone spur in his right elbow in August.

HOLLAND SELECTED RANGERS PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Left-handed pitcher Derek Holland was selected as the Rangers September Player of the Month in voting by writers and broadcasters who cover the team on a regular basis. Holland went 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA (6 ER/37.0 IP) in 6 games/5 starts for Texas last month, posting the lowest ERA in the American League among qualifiers (minimum 25.0 innings) in his only 2014 action after returning from the disabled list. It was the lowest monthly qualifying figure by a Ranger since Matt Harrison compiled a 1.29 ERA (6 ER/42.0 IP) in June 2012. It is the second time Holland has won the club's monthly award, the other in July 2011.

ADDITION FOR HARRISON FAMILY: Matt and Meghan Harrison's son, Easten Reid Harrison, was born on Monday afternoon.
