Rangers recall catcher Sam Huff from Round Rock

Houston, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced prior to Monday’s series opener in Houston that the club has recalled catcher Sam Huff from Triple-A Round Rock.  To make room for Huff on the active 28-man roster, the Rangers have optioned catcher Meibrys Viloria to Round Rock.

Huff has batted .260 with one home run and 5 RBI over 30 games/19 starts spanning three previous stints with the Rangers this season: April 28-May 1, May 10-June 20, and July 11-16.  He has made starts at catcher (13), first base (3), and designated hitter (3).  Huff will be seeking his first Major League action since a start as the designated hitter on July 15 vs. Seattle.  He has spent the balance of the season at Triple-A Round Rock, batting .260/.336/.533/.868 (64-246) with 21 home runs and 50 RBI over 63 games.  He went 3-for-6 with a home run and 4 RBI in his last game on Saturday vs. Oklahoma City.

Viloria batted .159 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI in 26 games with Texas after having his contract selected from Round Rock on June 21.  He began the year with Round Rock, batting .344  with 3 home runs and 21 RBI in 38 games.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers currently have 28 active players along with 39 players on the Major League roster and three players (Mitch Garver, Josh Sborz, Eli White) on the 60-day Injured List.
