Heredia avoids serious injury after HBP on hand

June 15th, 2019

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays outfielder left Friday’s 9-4 win over the Angels with a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning by Angels reliever Ty Buttrey. The good news for Heredia and the Rays was that the X-rays came back negative, and Heredia is listed as day to day.

“I feel good,” Heredia said. “A little bit in pain, but that’s just part of the game, and sometimes you don’t feel the pain with the adrenaline of the game, but I’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”

Buttrey's pitch was clocked at 97.9 mph, according to Statcast. Travis d'Arnaud pinch-ran for Heredia.

It’s the second time this season that Heredia has had to exit a game due to being hit by a pitch in the hand. The last time was in Miami against the Marlins on May 15. He didn't miss any time, and he returned to the lineup in the next series against the Yankees.

In his first season with the Rays, Heredia has been a solid backup and has shown flashes of power. The Cuban-born outfielder is hitting .250 with two home runs in 98 at-bats.

“He actually already came back in the cage and swung,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “So he’s completely available and potentially starting tomorrow. But it’s scary when it happens. We avoided a scare.”
