Mondesi logs homer, 3 RBIs in return from IL

KANSAS CITY -- Shortstop was reinstated from the injured list on Tuesday after recovering from a groin strain. And it didn’t take long for Mondesi to regain his stroke -- he smashed a two-run home run in the fifth inning off Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer in the Royals' 9-5 loss at Kauffman Stadium. Mondesi also had a sacrifice fly in the seventh off reliever Oliver Perez.

Prior to the game, the Royals also optioned shortstop Humberto Arteaga to Triple-A Omaha along with right-hander Scott Barlow. The club called up right-hander .

Barlow had an up-and-down season. In the middle of May, he had emerged as perhaps the Royals’ most reliable and dynamic bullpen arm -- he had a 1.77 ERA on May 14 and he had struck out 30 batters in 20 1/3 innings.

But in his last 16 outings, Barlow posted an 11.81 ERA and opponents posted a 1.125 OPS against him.

“He just needs to go reset, like the way [Ryan] O’Hearn had to do,” manager Ned Yost said. “He was probably overthrowing a bit. You know, you come in and you have success, like the times he came on with the bases loaded and no one out, and got us out of the inning several times. You think about that success and you start to think that’s what you can do. But then you have some struggles and it’s just hard to get it back.

“He’ll be fine. He just needs to go down there and reset a bit.”
