CLEVELAND -- Eddie Rosario ran the bases, took batting practice and did outfield drills on Sunday in what could be one of his final steps in his recovery from a sprained left ankle before his return to action with the Twins. Manager Rocco Baldelli did not yet have an injury update regarding Byron Buxton, who hit his head on the ground as he made a diving catch in the eighth inning of Saturday night's game.

Baldelli said that a Tuesday return for Rosario could be a possibility, though a final decision will not be made until Monday or Tuesday.

Though Baldelli did not make any firm commitments, it's also worth noting that Rosario's on-field drills also represented the final steps for both Buxton and Marwin Gonzalez before they were activated from the injured list earlier this season.

"I think he's in a good spot, and like I said, there's an aspect of this where he could be 99 percent of the way there physically or however you want to describe it, and just getting to that point mentally where you're confident in your ability to do everything and do it without hesitation and just be able to go out there and play," Baldelli said.

Though Rosario is typically known for his unshakeable confidence both on and off the field, Baldelli still expressed that Rosario's ability to be fully confident in the health and usage of his ankle contributed to why the 27-year-old outfielder has not yet returned to action.

"Every player that gets hurt, you lose a hair of confidence in your ability to perform at the Major League level," Baldelli said. "When they retake the field after dealing with an injury, whether a player wants to admit it or not -- whether a player even recognizes it or not -- you have to regain that confidence in your ability to go out there and pitch and field the ground ball and spin and do it."

Rosario was initially placed on the injured list on June 28 (retroactive to June 27) with the ankle sprain, which was sustained as he rounded first base while trying to stretch a single into a double. His recovery would mostly restore the Twins' outfield depth, which had been dire at the end of the first half with injuries to Rosario, Buxton, Gonzalez, Ehire Adrianza, Willians Astudillo and Max Kepler.

Baldelli said that Buxton underwent thorough testing on Saturday night following his removal from the game, but the skipper did not specify if the center fielder went through the concussion protocol. Buxton was expected to be evaluated again upon his arrival at Progressive Field on Sunday following a night of rest.

"Whatever the doctor thought was relevant, we wanted the [doctors] to basically go through everything," Baldelli said. "I don't think there's anything definitive that we can say right now. Like I said, he did hit the ground very hard, and when that happens, we're going to make sure we look at our guys."

C.J. Cron (right thumb inflammation) also took ground balls on Sunday and ran the bases. The Twins' first baseman has been out of action since July 6 with the injury to his thumb, which had previously lingered for a while before it became too big of an issue to keep him off the injured list.
