Giants set 26-man roster ahead of Opening Night showdown vs. Yankees

March 25th, 2026

SAN FRANCISCO -- After one last round of cuts, the Giants officially set their 26-man roster for their Opening Night matchup against the Yankees at Oracle Park on Wednesday.

The most notable omission was outfielder Luis Matos, who was designated for assignment after being the odd man out in the outfield competition.

Matos, 24, had been in the organization since signing with the Giants as a teenager in 2018, but he was out of options and ultimately edged out of a bench spot by Jerar Encarnacion and non-roster invitee Jared Oliva.

Here’s a look at the roster the Giants will carry into the start of the regular season:

Catcher (2): Patrick Bailey, Daniel Susac

Susac, a Rule 5 Draft pick who was acquired from the Twins, beat out veteran Eric Haase for the backup catcher spot after batting .350 with a .936 OPS and two home runs over 17 Cactus League games. He will make his Major League debut when he appears in his first game for the Giants.

First base (1): Rafael Devers

Devers missed some time with left hamstring tightness this spring, so there’s a chance he could see more time at DH early in the year. Casey Schmitt and Encarnacion will both be options to start at first base when Devers isn’t playing the field.

Second base (1): Luis Arraez

Arraez’s elite contact skills should bring a new dimension to the Giants’ lineup, but he’ll need to hit enough to make up for his shortcomings on defense.

Shortstop (1): Willy Adames

Adames emerged as a key impact bat and clubhouse leader after signing a franchise-record $182 million deal with the Giants last offseason. He crushed a team-high 30 home runs in 2025, becoming the first Giants hitter to reach the mark since Barry Bonds in 2004.

Third base (1): Matt Chapman

Chapman endured some inconsistency at the plate after suffering a right hand injury that led to two stints on the injured list last year, but he remained a stabilizing force on defense, which has long been his calling card.

Outfielders (5): Heliot Ramos, Harrison Bader, Jung Hoo Lee, Jerar Encarnacion, Jared Oliva

Ramos, Bader and Lee are locked into the three starting spots in the outfield, but Oliva should be a fascinating piece off the bench due to his knack for stealing bases. The 30-year-old journeyman hasn’t played in the Majors since 2021, but he earned a spot on the Giants’ roster after batting .375 with a .994 OPS and 14 stolen bases in 20 Cactus League games this year. Encarnacion appeared in only 19 games due to injuries last year, but he’s shown he can put a charge into a ball when he’s healthy.

Lefty hitters Will Brennan and Drew Gilbert were both optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, meaning the Giants will have an entirely right-handed bench to start the season.

Utility (2): Casey Schmitt, Christian Koss

Arraez will have an opportunity to hold down second base this year, but the Giants figure to mix in Schmitt and Koss at the spot, especially if they’re trying to protect a lead late in games.

Starting rotation (5): Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle, Adrian Houser, Landen Roupp

The Giants’ rotation appears mostly set, though there are some durability concerns since Roupp and Mahle have both struggled with injuries in the past. San Francisco has several young starters who could provide an extra layer of depth during the regular season, including Trevor McDonald, Carson Seymour, Blade Tidwell and Carson Whisenhunt.

Bullpen (8): Ryan Walker, Erik Miller, José Buttó, Ryan Borucki, Matt Gage, JT Brubaker, Caleb Kilian, Keaton Winn

Closing duties are expected to fall to Walker, who should get another shot to lock down the ninth after firing seven scoreless innings in his seven Cactus League appearances this year. Miller, Borucki and Gage will give the Giants three lefty options to start the year, with Brubaker available to provide long relief if needed. Winn and Kilian, a one-time Giants prospect who rejoined the organization on a Minor League deal over the offseason, nabbed the final two spots, forcing veteran Michael Fulmer to open the season at Triple-A Sacramento.
