'This is crazy': Twins energized by new trade acquisitions

March 14th, 2022

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Some Twins players were asleep when their front office blew up the transaction wire late Sunday night with a five-player blockbuster trade with the Yankees. Manager Rocco Baldelli was awake -- but barely.

About 10 hours later, they congregated in the home clubhouse at Hammond Stadium ahead of the first day of workouts with no idea what the next several days and weeks could bring -- but with plenty of added excitement about getting ready for the season, even as the world of their clubhouse continued to shift around them.

"I mean, there's going to be a lot more moves made, you know?" catcher Ryan Jeffers wondered out loud. "We're not done, I would assume."

"This is crazy," shortstop Jorge Polanco said. "Anything can happen. You don't know who's going to be traded and who's going to be your teammate."

"There’s a lot of energy moving around," reliever Tyler Duffey said. "It’s exciting."

Gone are Mitch Garver and Josh Donaldson, two fixtures of the 2021 clubhouse. Jeffers is the sole survivor from the catchers' room, separated from his positional partner of last season and split from Ben Rortvedt, who came up through the Minors with him. The two newest Twins, Gio Urshela and Gary Sánchez, arrived in a car from Tampa, Fla., after the team meeting. Sonny Gray and his veteran leadership will arrive on Tuesday.

Coming off a last-place finish in the American League Central last season, it's fun for those who experienced the sting of those losses to see president of baseball operations Derek Falvey and general manager Thad Levine wheeling and dealing to impact the outcomes of this season and next.

"It’s incredible," Duffey said. "It’s exciting. It’s good for fans especially. There’s a lot going on, and it’s building up a lot of hype around our game again and we needed that, especially after the last three months."

With a deal for an impact short-term pitcher in Gray clearly meant to improve the 2022 and '23 squads and another powerful catcher in Sánchez now in the fold to replace Garver's lost production, Jeffers sees the moves as a clear signal of confidence in their potential, particularly with additional reports signaling that the action could put the Twins in position to go after a top-tier shortstop like Trevor Story, who remains a free agent, or another pitching acquisition.

"It’s really cool to see our front office really investing in our team and really saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to go get guys. We’re going to trade away a guy with really high upside, a first-rounder in [Chase] Petty to go get an established starter that we know is going to help the team,'" Jeffers said. "It’s cool to be a part of an organization that feels pretty comfortable that [indicates], 'Hey, if we put stuff together, we have a chance to challenge the White Sox for the division and potentially go far in the playoffs.'"

Urshela and Sánchez both expressed excitement to find their new opportunities with the Twins, with the pair of friends having exchanged phone calls both Sunday night and Monday morning to discuss their happiness for the work to come. They arrived late to camp but got a chance to debrief with Baldelli before Urshela took some ground balls and Sánchez hit off several Twins pitchers.

"Coming with Gary, it's a lot of confidence," Urshela said. "I know a couple of players here. I know it's a really good organization with a lot of really good people here."

The intensity of preparation for these Twins was already evident with the live batting practice that took place on the first day of full-squad camp, and even as the roster remains more fluid than ever around them, the new-look group (so far) will seek simply to control what they can control: their work to ramp up their bodies for the season.

"In order for us to be a championship team, we can't really focus too much on what the front office has got," center fielder Byron Buxton said. "We know that they're trying to make the best moves for the team and for us moving forward. For me, it's about coming out here and helping each and every one of us process the right way for the season and be ready for Opening Day."
