ANAHEIM -- The Angels made a trade with the Yankees on Thursday, acquiring left-handed reliever Jayvien Sandridge for cash considerations.
Sandridge, 26, made his Major League debut last season, allowing two runs with two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning July 5. He also had a 4.66 ERA with 54 strikeouts and 19 walks in 36 2/3 innings across three levels in the Minors last season, including 31 2/3 frames at Triple-A.
The Angels designated right-hander Osvaldo Bido for assignment (DFA’d) to make room for Sandridge on the 40-man roster. Bido had been claimed off waivers from the Marlins on Tuesday and had been claimed by four clubs this offseason, so the Angels are hopeful he’ll clear waivers and he’ll remain in the organization. Bido, 30, has a career 5.07 ERA with 179 strikeouts and 82 walks in 193 2/3 innings over the past three seasons in the Majors with the Pirates (2023) and A's ('24-25).
Sandridge's four-seamer averaged 95.6 mph during his lone appearance last year and he also mixed in a slider, sinker and split-finger. The 6-foot-5, 220-pounder also registered a 16.5% swinging strike rate at Triple-A in 2025.
Sandridge, a 32nd-round pick by the Orioles in 2018, still has Minor League options remaining, so he can give the club some Minor League depth if he doesn’t make the roster.
He’s also the second reliever to join the Angels from the Yankees this week, as they also claimed right-hander Kaleb Ort on waivers on Wednesday. Ort, 33, has a career 5.00 ERA with 126 strikeouts and 56 walks in 122 1/3 innings over five years in the Majors, including a 4.89 ERA with 49 strikeouts and 27 walks in 46 innings with the Astros last year.
Ort will compete for a spot in the bullpen and will look to count down on his home run rate, as he gave up eight last year and seven in 24 2/3 innings in ’24. But Ort has a big arm, with his four-seamer averaging 96.4 mph last year, and his underlying numbers were also strong, including an xERA of 3.41.
The Angels DFA’d outfielder Wade Meckler to make room for Ort on the 40-man roster. Meckler had been claimed off waivers from the Giants earlier this month. He hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since 2023, and the Angels later acquired fellow outfielder Josh Lowe from the Rays in a three-team trade on Jan. 16.
