Angels catcher Max Stassi underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip after the injury was discovered in an MRI exam at the end of the season, the club announced Wednesday. The timeline for his return is four to six months, which means he could miss the start of the 2021 season.

Stassi, 29, is coming off a breakout year, hitting .278/.352/.533 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 31 games. It came after he went 3-for-42 in 20 games with the Angels in 2019 after being acquired in a Trade Deadline deal with the Astros.

It's the second straight offseason in which Stassi has undergone a hip operation, as he also had right hip surgery after last season. Stassi had a similar timeline last year, but he arrived at Spring Training healthy.

Stassi is eligible for arbitration this offseason, and he remains under team control through 2022. He's regarded as the club's primary catcher, but the Angels could look to add a veteran to join him this offseason via free agency or a trade. Anthony Bemboom and José Briceño remain on the 40-man roster as backup catchers.
