CHICAGO -- Mike Trout woke up still experiencing discomfort in his right toe, so the All-Star center fielder was held out of the Angels’ lineup for Saturday night’s game against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. Trout, however, did make an appearance as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of the Halos' 8-7 win. He was intentionally walked and replaced by pinch-runner Taylor Ward.

Trout, who exited Friday’s game in the fifth inning, is listed as day to day.

“He was a little sore today,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said. “It didn’t recover like it normally does, so we’re gonna give him the day and hopefully he’s fine tomorrow.”

Trout has been playing with the issue for a few weeks and also missed a game against the Rangers on Aug. 28.

“We’re not really sure what makes it flare up, but when it flares up, it tends to get worse,” Ausmus said.

Trout, a two-time American League Most Valuable Player, is having arguably the best offensive season of his career, slashing .291/.437/.645 with 45 home runs and 104 RBIs. He entered Saturday tied with Pete Alonso of the Mets for the Majors’ home run lead.

Brian Goodwin started in center and batted second. He homered in Friday's win after replacing Trout.

Worth noting

Infielder Tommy La Stella (right tibia fracture) took part in a live batting practice session on Saturday.

“He had 11 at-bats and swung the bat fine,” Ausmus said. “We still don’t have a date as to when he’ll return.”
