Angels shortstop Zach Neto put together one of the best stretches of his career to earn the AL Player of the Week Award, but even he couldn't top the historic seven-day run of Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., who became just the second player to ever win both a Player of the Week and Play of the Week Award at the same time.
Neto went 14-for-28 (.500) with four doubles, a triple, two homers and two steals while driving in nine runs in six games. It's the second Player of the Week Award for the 25 year-old, who also took home the honors last Aug. 18. With 22 home runs and 18 steals already, Neto is well on his way to a third consecutive 20-20 season with Los Angeles.
He's the second Angels player to win a Player of the Week Award this season, joining Jose Soriano, who won the award on April 13.
Tatis Jr. continued his scorching second half by going 12-for-25 (.480) with two doubles, four homers and 11 RBIs in six games, including a four-hit, two-homer game Sunday against the Twins. After notably going without a home run in his first 55 games to start the season, the 27-year-old has gone deep a dozen times in just 33 games since the All-Star break, posting a 1.098 OPS along the way.
Of course, the two-time Gold Glove Award winner doesn't just excel at the plate, as evidenced by his grand slam-saving catch to rob Francisco Lindor on Tuesday at Citi Field. His reaction to the catch was perhaps even more memorable than the full-extension leaping grab, as he momentarily stood still and stone-faced before the stunned New York crowd.
This is the fourth time Tatis Jr. has won the Play of the Week. Tatis Jr. and former teammate Juan Soto (April 2024) are the only two players to take home Player of the Week and Top Play honors in the same week.
This is also the fourth career NL Player of the Week Award for Tatis Jr., who previously won once each in 2020, '21 and '25, and the second for a Padres player this season, joining teammate Gavin Sheets (May 18).
