Roberts confirms Dodgers' meeting with Harper

February 25th, 2019

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed reports Monday that he and other club officials met with free agent  in Las Vegas on Sunday night, but offered few details on the meeting or likelihood of a deal with the outfielder.

Roberts, CEO Stan Kasten and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman returned to Camelback Ranch on Monday morning from the meeting, the trio having left after Sunday’s Cactus League win over the Angels.

“It was good. Just trying to get to know each other,” Roberts said. “In the spirit of us, as the Dodgers, vetting a certain process makes sense. For those guys to do their due diligence as well.”

Roberts wouldn’t discuss details of the contract discussions, or what Harper wanted to know from the club.

“We’re always trying to make our team better, always trying to improve in any way,” Roberts said. “When we have an opportunity to vet someone out, I’m in, whatever the organization asks. I’m not too hopeful or anything. This is just talk, it’s conversation.”

Roberts said he got to know Harper at last year’s All-Star Game, when Roberts was the National League manager.

“Heck of a player, really great family man,” Roberts said. “Great guy.”
