Kershaw slated for rehab start Thursday

April 2nd, 2019

LOS ANGELES -- ’s Minor League rehab start has been set for Thursday night at Triple-A Oklahoma City, manager Dave Roberts said Monday.

Kershaw, who opened the season on the Dodgers’ injured list because shoulder inflammation interrupted his spring preparations, threw a bullpen session Monday as a final tune-up for Thursday, which will be Opening Day for Oklahoma City.

“He will keep his Opening Day streak alive,” joked Roberts, who had named Kershaw to his ninth consecutive Opening Day start for the Dodgers before his injury. Hyun-Jin Ryu started in place of Kershaw and allowed one run in six innings of a 12-5 win over Arizona.

Roberts has said it won’t be determined whether Kershaw will need an additional rehab start before he rejoins the big league rotation. Last year, Kershaw missed four weeks with biceps tendinitis and returned having thrown only simulated games with no Minor League rehab. But in his return start, he injured his back and went back on the injured list.

Kershaw threw a three-inning simulated game Saturday, making 50 pitches, so a four-inning, 60-pitch target for Thursday is reasonable.

• Rich Hill, also on the injured list, threw aggressively on flat ground Monday and said his strained left knee “had a great day.” Hill said he’s headed in the right direction and Roberts speculated that the next step, throwing off a mound, could happen in a day or two. When it does, Hill will wear a knee brace.
