D-backs seeking return to winning ways after entering mini-skid

SEATTLE -- For the first time in almost three weeks, the Diamondbacks are riding a losing streak.

Stymied by the pitching of Bryan Woo on Saturday night, Arizona's offense could not get much going as Seattle rolled to a 5-1 win at T-Mobile Park. The Mariners will try to finish off a sweep of the three-game set Sunday afternoon.

The Diamondbacks knew they were going to be in for a battle after cruising through a 13-game stretch against the Rockies and Giants with an 11-2 mark.

"I said it last night, we knew coming up here it was gonna be a dogfight and we got only one thing to do, and that's go out and play our best baseball game tomorrow and try and salvage one game here," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "We've been playing good baseball. I have every reason to believe that will continue tomorrow."

One thing they didn't face in their recent stretch of success was a pitcher the caliber of Woo, who retired the first 13 batters he faced and allowed just two hits while striking out nine and not walking a batter in seven innings.

"We definitely faced a good arm today," outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt said. "He had some good stuff throughout the game, and we did what we could to muster some stuff up and work counts and try and make the most quality contact we could."

Woo and a pair of relievers challenged the Arizona hitters throughout the night. It was just the third time this season that the Diamondbacks did not draw a walk in the game.

While Woo was dealing, Diamondbacks starter was trying to figure out how to manage the game as best he could without his good stuff.

Nelson's four-seamer, two-seamer and slider were not up to par, he said, and the Mariners made him pay dearly when he missed his spot.

Seattle's first four runs of the game came via the long ball, with Luke Raley and Dominic Canzone each hitting solo homers in the second inning and Colt Emerson and Julio Rodríguez adding solo shots in the third.

Nelson would allow just one more unearned run later in the game, but that was more than enough for Woo.

The last time the Diamondbacks lost two in a row was in Texas against the Rangers on May 12-13. The last time they lost three in a row was May 6-8.

"I don't think we need to think too hard about it and look too deep into it," Waldschmidt said of dropping two straight. "That's baseball. I mean, just like today, we went out there and a guy put together a good performance on the mound. That's going to happen. I think for us, it's just being able to bounce back tomorrow and not think too hard about it. He went out there and he threw a good game, and we put together the best at-bats that we could. And I think tomorrow's a new day."

The Diamondbacks have a hot pitcher of their own going Sunday in Merrill Kelly, who has won his last four starts and has a 2.17 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP over that stretch.
