What to know: Dodgers 2020 offseason FAQ

November 2nd, 2020

Who’s a free agent? Who’s eligible for salary arbitration? Who needs to be protected from the Rule 5 Draft?

What follows are answers to these and other frequently asked questions about the world champion Dodgers’ offseason.

Which players are free agents?
RHP , UTL , LHP , OF , RHP , 3B , LHP .

Did any of them receive qualifying offers?
Turner received a qualifying offer four years ago before re-signing with the Dodgers and was not eligible to receive another. The Dodgers didn't offer any of their other free agents a qualifying offer, which is $18.9 million for one year in 2021.

Who might be a non-tender candidate, and when does the club have to make that decision?
The non-tender deadline is Dec. 2. The Dodgers have no obvious non-tender candidates, unless they choose to trim modest salaries from their bullpen. Left-hander , who was left off the postseason roster, and right-hander , who pitched in several key spots during the World Series, would qualify.

Who needs to be added to the 40-man roster this winter to avoid the Rule 5 Draft, and do they have a crunch for roster spots?
Brett de Geus (the team's No. 27 prospect, per MLB Pipeline), Gerardo Carrillo (No. 16) and Andre Jackson (No. 28) are most likely to be protected. Marshall Kasowski, Zach Reks, Jeren Kendall and Omar Estevez (No. 21) are on the bubble. Rosters must be set for the Rule 5 Draft by Nov. 20.

Who is eligible for salary arbitration?
Alexander, C , OF/1B , RHP , Floro, SS , LHP .

What kind of help do they need and will they be active in free agency?
They are the World Series champs, are already favored to repeat, have the deepest roster and have only one high-profile free agent (Turner). Add it up and there’s not much of a pressing need compared to the 29 other clubs. If Turner leaves, they will need at least a candidate to platoon there with . They will probably look for another Treinen-type rehab project to resurrect for bullpen support, possibly a utility replacement if Hernández leaves and a left-handed-hitting outfielder to compete with , with Pederson likely leaving.
