WASHINGTON -- Ample hype exists for the three-game series between the World Series-hopeful Dodgers and Nationals. Relentless rain Friday put the matchup on hold for a day.
Saturday's schedule now includes a split doubleheader. At 11:05 a.m. PT, Los Angeles will send Thomas Stripling (0-1, 2.20 ERA) to the mound against Washington's Tanner Roark (2-3, 3.33 ERA).
Rich Hill (1-2, 6.20 ERA) is slated for the second game. The Nationals chose to hold Friday's scheduled starter, Max Scherzer (7-1, 1.69 ERA), for the 5:05 p.m. PT matchup.
Friday's game was postponed because rain -- a staple in the nation's capital all week -- was forecasted throughout the evening.
"I think the consensus was the forecast, which obviously we can't predict," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "[We] walked the field just recently and the field was in good condition, so I guess MLB and the Nationals decided that the forecast was the ultimate thing."
The forecast suggests the rain might not go away until at least early Saturday afternoon. The Dodgers have their fingers crossed that they can complete at least one game on Saturday, or a Sunday doubleheader could occur.
"Pretty confident," Roberts said of getting both games in Saturday. "Whether we have to delay a little bit the first game and make a long day even longer potentially, I think we're confident we'll get all three in this weekend."
Los Angeles ended a six-game losing streak with Thursday's 7-0 win at Miami. Washington has won 13 of its last 15 games.
Both teams have an off-day June 4 if needed. Los Angeles plays at Colorado on June 3 and then opens a series at Pittsburgh on June 5.
"I know that if we don't get in two tomorrow, then a doubleheader on Sunday is a possibility and now you're looking at the June 4 mutual off-day. We haven't really found common ground on that," Roberts said.
Alex Wood (0-4, 3.35 ERA) remains Sunday's starter, the manager said.
Los Angeles will have at least one new pitcher Saturday and perhaps two fresh arms.
Left-handed reliever Tony Cingrani (left shoulder inflammation) will be activated from the 10-day disabled list Saturday, Roberts confirmed.
The Dodgers claimed right-hander Erik Goeddel off waivers from the Mariners on Friday. Roberts said the reliever was expected in Washington on Saturday, but a corresponding move remains unclear. Each team can add a 26th player for the doubleheader.
Goeddel, 29, went 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in five games for Seattle this season. He sports a 3.78 ERA over 115 Major League games during five seasons.
"I know he's a former [UCLA] Bruin. He's pitched well," Roberts said. "I don't know a whole lot about him. I really don't. I just kind of learned this. I'm going to dig in on him. I know he's performed and has a good arm."
