MIAMI -- First baseman Freddie Freeman was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game for the Dodgers’ series opener against the Marlins on Friday night at loanDepot park.
Freeman has been dealing with soreness in his right knee, with it being his third game off in the past 10 days, with another day of rest on the team’s off-day on Thursday. The issue also limited him to DH duties on Tuesday. He is considered day to day.
“Freddie is going to be down another day,” manager Dave Roberts said pregame on Friday. “Just turf, flight, travel. I think it’s smart to give him one more day, and then my expectation is he’ll be back in there tomorrow.”
According to Roberts, the 36-year-old has gotten treatment, but the way some stuff was trending led to the decision to give him another day off.
Freeman has started off September in a bit of a slump, going 3-for-22 (.136) with nine strikeouts and five walks. He is slashing .297/.375/.453 with an .828 OPS this year.
Roberts said on Wednesday that there was no incident that caused Freeman’s knee soreness and going on the injured list is not a possibility.
“Freddie does a really good job of hitting against his front side, and then when you can't do that with your front side -- your right knee -- then you're compromised," Roberts told reporters on Wednesday. "I see there's [been] a lot more swing-and-miss in the last few days. That's just not who he is."
