Indians announce 40-man roster additions

November 21st, 2019

The Cleveland Indians today announced the following transactions relative to the 2020 Major League 40-man roster:

Selected the contracts of OF DANIEL JOHNSON and LHP SCOTT MOSS from AAA Columbus.

Selected the contract of RHP TRISTON McKENZIE from Class-A Lynchburg.

Designated RHP NICK GOODY for assignment.

Johnson, 24, split the 2019 campaign between AA Akron and AAA Columbus, batting a combined .290 (140-for-483) with 76 runs, 34 doubles, 7 triples, 19 home runs and 77 RBI in 123 games (.361/.507/.868). He amassed professional career-highs in virtually every offensive category and finished tied for first among Indians farmhands in extra-base hits (60), tied for third in RBI and fourth in runs. The Vallejo, CA native earned organizational All-Star honors and recently rated the 16th-overall prospect in the Indians Player Development System (MLB.com). The left-handed hitting outfielder was acquired from Washington last November along with RHP Jefry Rodriguez and INF Andruw Monasterio in exchange for C Yan Gomes.

McKenzie, 22, owns a career Minor League ERA of 2.68 over 59 professional starts (329.0IP, 230H, 98ER, 98BB, 394SO, .194 avg) since his first round selection (42nd overall) in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. The Palm Beach, FL native did not pitch in 2019 due to right rotator cuff and right pectoral injuries. He has been tabbed the second-best prospect in the system entering 2020 (MLB.com) and began 2019 as the 41st overall prospect in MLB (MLB.com).

Moss, 25, was one of five players acquired from Cincinnati on July 31 in the three-team, seven-player trade that sent RHP Trevor Bauer to Cincinnati. The DeLand, FL native went 10-6 with a 2.96 ERA in 26 combined starts (130.2IP, 99H, 43ER, 159SO, .211 avg) in 2019 and at the time of the July transaction, he was third in the Southern League in strikeouts (123) while pitching for the AA Chattanooga Lookouts.  Over his six starts in the Indians organization, he posted a 1.26 ERA for Columbus and Akron (4ER/28.2IP). He began his professional career as Cincinnati’s fourth round pick in the 2016 draft out of the University of Florida and owns a four-year ERA of 3.28 (159ER/436.2IP).

The 40-man roster is at 40.
