Miami Marlins acquire Jacob Turner, Rob Brantly & Brian Flynn from Detroit

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Jacob Turner, catcher Rob Brantly and left-handed pitcher Brian Flynn from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for RHP Anibal Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante. In addition, the teams swapped their Competitive Balance Draft picks in the 2013 Draft. The announcement was made by Marlins President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest.

Turner, 21, was the Tigers’ first-round pick in the 2009 June Draft and was named the 22^nd-best prospect in baseball and the top prospect in the Tigers organization by Baseball America prior to the 2012 season. He has made three starts with Detroit this year, including earning his first ML win yesterday vs. the White Sox. Also this year, Turner made 10 starts with triple-A Toledo, going 4-2, 3.16 and was 1-2, 1.66 in four starts with single-A Lakeland. In 2011, Turner made his Major League debut, in addition to pitching for the U.S. Team at the Futures Game and being named an Eastern League (Double-A) mid-season All-Star. He is a native of St. Charles, MO.

Brantly, who turned 23 on July 14, is a left-handed hitting catcher who was the Tigers’ third-round pick in the 2010 June Draft. He was on the U.S. Team at the Futures Game in 2012 and was rated the seventh-best prospect in the Tigers’ organization by Baseball America prior to the season. Brantly spent the beginning of 2012 with double-A Erie, prior to being promoted to triple-A Toledo. In 2011, he was named to the Midwest League’s mid- and post-season All Star teams. Born in San Diego, CA, Brantly was selected out of the University of California-Riverside.

Flynn, 22, was selected by Detroit in the seventh round of the 2011 Draft and made his pro debut in 2011 going 7-2, 3.46 in 13 starts with single-A West Michigan. This season, Flynn was 8-4, 3.71 in 18 starts with Lakeland and lost his only start with double-A Erie. A 6-8, 268-pounder, Flynn was drafted out of Wichita State University. He was born in Tulsa, OK.

Sanchez, who is a free-agent following the 2012 season, was acquired by the Marlins in a seven-player trade from Boston following the 2005 season and is currently 5-7, 3.94 in 19 starts. He threw the fourth no-hitter in Marlins history, on Sept. 6, 2006.

Infante was acquired by Miami from Atlanta in a three-player trade following the 2010 season. He is currently hitting .287 in 85 games, after hitting .276 in 148 games last year.

The Marlins and Tigers also swapped Competitive Balance Draft picks. The Marlins will send the Tigers the sixth pick in compensation round A (following the first round) in the 2013 Draft, while obtaining the sixth pick in compensation round B (following the second round) in the 2013 Draft.
