Nunez runs bases with glove ... in mouth

March 28th, 2021

Some players keep their batting gloves on when they run the bases. Some stick their gloves in their back pocket. Then, there’s , the Marlins’ No. 15 prospect.

Nunez drew the attention of Cardinals broadcasters Dan McLaughlin and Jim Edmonds when he ran the bases with one glove in his mouth during Saturday’s Grapefruit League game, leading to some fun speculation about why he was doing it.

“Rumor is, he used to smile when he was stealing bases, and so they made him put the glove in his mouth,” Edmonds said.

Nunez, 20, responded on Twitter, but he neither confirmed nor denied that notion.

“Lol … just being a kid,” Nunez tweeted.

When you're as fast as Nunez, nobody is going to doubt your baserunning methods. While he was caught stealing by Yadier Molina earlier in Saturday’s game, Nunez stole 28 bases in 30 attempts in the Minors in 2019, his first professional season.
