Marlins sign Giancarlo Stanton to 13-year contract
2014 NL Hank Aaron Award winner signed through 2027
MIAMI - The Miami Marlins today announced that they have signed Giancarlo Stanton to a 13-year contract, the longest in Major League history, through the 2027 season, with a club option for 2028. The announcement was made by Marlins' Owner Jeffrey Loria and President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill.
This season, Stanton led the National League in home runs (37), slugging percentage (.555) and total bases (299), and went on to garner a second-place finish in National League Most Valuable Player balloting by the Baseball Writers Association of America. On October 25, Stanton was named the NL's recipient of the Hank Aaron Award, given to the top offensive performer in each League, and two weeks later won his first Silver SluggerTM Award. Additionally, Stanton was voted by his peers as the Players Choice Award winner as the NL's Outstanding Player.
A two-time All-Star, Stanton, who turned 25 earlier this month, is one of just four active players in the Majors to record three 30+ home run seasons prior to turning 25, joining Miguel Cabrera, Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez. On August 25 in Anaheim, he became the 10th-youngest player in ML history to reach 150 career home runs, and he finished the season one RBI shy of becoming the 10th-youngest player ever to reach 150 home runs and 400 RBI. Stanton, who also led the NL in slugging percentage in 2012, became the third player in ML history to lead the NL in slugging twice before the age of 25, joining Willie Mays and Stan Musial.
Drafted by the Marlins in the second round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Stanton made his ML debut on June 8, 2010 in Philadelphia. He was named to the NL All-Star team in 2012 and again in 2014, and has been voted the Marlins MVP three times by the South Florida chapter of the BBWAA. Stanton is currently tied for the Marlins all-time lead in home runs (154) and owns the Club record for most multi-home run games (13). For his career, Stanton owns a .271 average (619x2288) with 350 runs, 138 doubles, 154 home runs, 399 RBI, a .364 OBP, a .540 SLG and a .903 OPS in 634 games.
