Nimmo good to go after taking pitch to hand

April 4th, 2019

MIAMI -- The lace marks from the baseball that struck 's left hand remain, but the left fielder returned to the Mets' lineup and batted leadoff for the series finale against the Marlins at Marlins Park.

Nimmo went 0-for-4 and scored a run in the Mets' 6-4 victory, which sealed the series sweep.

Nimmo was hit by an 89.5 mph fastball on the knuckle of his left ring finger during the seventh inning on Tuesday night. Preliminary X-rays came back negative following the game.

After passing his baseline grip test and hitting in the cages on Wednesday, Nimmo was cleared to play.

"[Manager Mickey Callaway] said, 'Hey, if you feel like you're good to go, then you're in there.' I just wanted to make sure that I felt like I could make decisions without compromising or without trying to keep it from hurting," Nimmo said. "Once I found that out -- it was going to be normal at-bats -- I'll do whatever they want. He just told me it was going to be my decision whether I felt good enough or not."

The left-handed-hitting Nimmo, who checked his swing on the 2-2 offering from Marlins left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, initially stayed in the game and was credited with an RBI hit-by-pitch after a replay review overturned the original call. However, Keon Broxton replaced Nimmo in left field in the bottom of the inning.

The negative X-ray came as a relief to Nimmo, who went on the injured list last August after sustaining a bruised left index finger on an HBP.

"That one got me right on the knuckles -- right in the middle," he said. "This one was higher up on the knuckles, so I'm glad that it was higher up and it's not, like, right where the bat goes. That helps out a lot."

McNeil sits

wasn't in the starting lineup on Wednesday but was available off the bench after aggravating his "banged up" left knee -- the same one he hit against the outfield wall during Spring Training.

According to Callaway, McNeil tweaked the knee on Tuesday when he deked a throw to first base and tagged out Lewis Brinson as he approached third during the fourth inning. McNeil exited the game prior to the sixth in a double switch.

There is no concern over the discomfort and no plans for testing, and Callaway expects McNeil back in the lineup for Thursday's home opener at Citi Field.

"Not at this point," Callaway said. "[It's just] an opportune time to kind of give him the day off, or at least the first half of the game off at least."

Illness sapping Lugo's energy

Right-hander has been dealing with an illness over the past 4-5 days, per Callaway, which coincides with his last two outings (seven runs in 2 1/3 innings).

Callaway noted that Lugo's pitch usage has been different, with him turning more to sinkers and sliders instead of four-seamers and breaking balls.

"He's feeling good," Callaway said. "I think he obviously would like to perform a little bit better, but I think that the sickness or the illness or whatever has really gotten his energy down. You see it in his velo. His velo's down 2-3 mph. As soon as he gets over that, I think he's going to be fine and get over the hump."
