Jones' big day trumps Hanley's as O's beat Red Sox
BOSTON -- Led by another magnificent offensive effort from Adam Jones, the Orioles tallied 15 hits to pull away from the Red Sox for an 8-3 win at Fenway Park on Sunday.
All eight of Baltimore's runs came off Red Sox starter Rick Porcello, with Jones going 4-for-5 with five RBIs -- including a two-run homer and a bases-clearing double. New England native Ryan Flaherty also homered for the O's, and Jimmy Paredes -- promoted on Saturday -- had three hits and three runs scored.
"That's a good club over there. We've been fortunate the last couple of nights and we got a tough break in the first one," manager Buck Showalter said. "Ballgames aren't over 'til the last out here. You've got to grind these games out, and our guys did."
Hanley Ramirez hit a three-run homer off O's starter Miguel Gonzalez, who went five innings, and reliever Craig Breslow tossed three scoreless innings for Boston. Slugger David Ortiz was ejected from the game in the fifth inning.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Can't stop Adam: Jones is 8-for-14 in the series and tied a career high with four hits. The O's center fielder has had a ridiculous start to the season and is batting .457 on the year.
"When [Jones is] getting a pitch, he's not missing it," Showalter said. "If you go back through some of those pitches, they're not all strikes. Keep that in mind when someone's talking about [being] a little too aggressive out of the zone. That's who he is." More >

Rick gets rocked: Porcello became the latest Boston starter to suffer through an ugly outing. The right-hander gave up 12 hits over five-plus innings, which ties a career high, and watched his ERA inflate to 6.63 through three games. The finishing blow came in the sixth inning, when Porcello loaded the bases and served up a three-run double to Jones that put Baltimore ahead by five runs. The Red Sox have had five starters pitch fewer than six innings in the past seven games.
"There ended up being some pitches up in the strike zone," manager John Farrell said. "He had to fight back in the count a number of times. The left-handers took some good swings against him today." More >

O's 'pen continues to surge: A night removed from tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings, the bullpen was mighty for Baltimore once again. Right-hander Tommy Hunter threw two perfect innings and was followed by Kevin Gausman, who finished things up. The turnaround is big for the O's 'pen, which allowed at least one run in each of the team's first 10 games.
"It was two innings of no runs, so that's what you're supposed to do," Hunter said. "That's your job, that's your job title. Go out, throw baseballs and put up zeros.
"The first 10 games didn't go the way we had planned, either. Hopefully, the next 152 do."

UMP SWITCH
Home-plate umpire Paul Emmel left the game in the middle of the fourth inning. After a short delay, he was replaced by second-base umpire John Tumpane. Umpire Jordan Baker, who ejected Ubaldo Jimenez from Friday's game, was noticeably absent due to personal reasons.
"He pulled ... something in his leg," Showalter said. "I'm not sure. He was struggling."
PAPI EJECTED
In the fifth inning, Tumpane threw Ortiz out of the game for arguing a check-swing call by third-base umpire Jerry Meals. Ortiz was fuming, flipping his bat and tossing his batting gloves as Farrell argued on his behalf. He was replaced as the designated hitter by Daniel Nava, who went 0-for-2. More >

Orioles: Wei-Yin Chen takes the mound for the Orioles on an extra day of rest in Monday's 11:05 a.m. ET series finale against the Red Sox. The lefty has traditionally done well on six days of rest and will face Boston for the first time this season.
Red Sox: Righty Justin Masterson (1-0, 7.59 ERA) gets the ball in this year's Patriots' Day matchup. He dealt with shaky command his last time out, allowing seven runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Nationals, and has given up at least five runs in six of his last nine outings dating back to 2014.
