Rosales designated, infielder Alberto recalled

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have designated infielder Adam Rosales for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for pitcher Derek Holland. To replace Rosales, the Rangers called up infielder Hanser Alberto from Triple-A Round Rock.

Holland was on the 60-day disabled list, which doesn't count against the 40-man roster. But they had a full 40-man roster, so they had to make room for Holland. Their choices were Rosales or one of their Minor League pitchers like Roman Mendez, Jon Edwards, Phil Klein or Alex Claudio.

The Rangers opted for Rosales because they had Alberto to take over as their utility infielder.

"We needed a roster spot for Derek Holland," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "It was not a move we looked at and said it was an easy move. It was a challenging move. We like Adam and the consistency he brings. Not everybody can sit on the bench and do what he is capable of doing. He gives you a solid professional effort on the field.

"Without playing consistently, that's tough to do and be willing to do that. Plus, Adam is capable of playing all over the field. Sometimes you have roster constraints and have to make a baseball decision. This one was tough for all of us."

Alberto was with the Rangers from May 28 to July 4 and hit .247 with nine runs and three RBIs in 25 games. He started 16 games at second, two at shortstop and two at third base. He was hitting .310 at Round Rock in addition to playing standout defense.

"Alberto is a plus defender across the dirt," Banister said. "I feel confident wherever we put Alberto, he'll give us a solid effort."

The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release or outright Rosales to the Minors. He was hitting .228 with three home runs and seven RBI in 55 games, plus made two emergency appearances as a pitcher.

Worth noting

• The Rangers have activated pitcher Tanner Scheppers from the disabled list and optioned him to Round Rock. Scheppers, who is 4-1 with a 5.66 ERA in 38 games for the Rangers, has been sidelined since Aug. 2 with a bone bruise in his left knee.

• Closer Shawn Tolleson has been dealing with a sore right foot for the past two days. He was checked out medically on Wednesday and cleared to play. Tolleson stepped on first base awkwardly in the ninth inning on Monday.

• The Rangers have optioned pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez to Round Rock.
