Gordon's blast lifts Royals past Rangers in 10th

ARLINGTON -- Alex Gordon hit a leadoff homer in the 10th inning to lift the Royals to a 7-6 victory over the Rangers on Tuesday night at Globe Life Park. The decisive blast came off reliever Stolmy Pimentel.

The Royals held a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Rangers rallied with a run on Adrian Beltre's two-out single off closer Greg Holland. It was Holland's first blown save since July 24, 2014. He had been successful in 26 straight save situations. More >

The Rangers led 3-1 after five innings before the Royals rallied for three runs in the sixth off of starter Nick Martinez. This was the first time in Martinez's seven starts that the Rangers have lost. More >

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Bizarre seventh: Trailing, 5-4, the Rangers had four hits in the seventh, but scored only one run. Shin-Soo Choo led off with a hit and then Elvis Andrus grounded a hit-and-run single through the left side. Choo hesitated as he approached second, then tried to go to third and was thrown out by left fielder Gordon. After Beltre's single moved Andrus to third, Kyle Blanks had a check-swing flare fall into right field to score the tying run. More >

"It was unbelievable. That was kind of a third-base play right there," Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas said of Gordon's play. "He came in and fielded it on the run. It just shows what kind of athlete he is, especially out there in left field. He puts it on the money and makes my job easy at third just to catch it and tag him."

Beltre delivers, picked off: The Rangers trailed by a run going into the bottom of the ninth, but Beltre delivered a two-out single to tie it. Then, with Carlos Corporan at the plate, Beltre strayed too far off first on a ball in the dirt. Catcher Salvador Perez fired to first and Beltre was initially called safe. But an umpire review overturned the call to end the inning.

Moose back on loose: Moustakas has carried a hot bat on the road all season, and he came through again with a go-ahead home run in the seventh. Moustakas, who had an American League-best .415 road batting average entering Tuesday, fell behind, 0-2, and then Alex Claudio threw a third straight slider in about the same location that Moustakas belted to right-center field for his fourth home run. "I was looking for a fastball away and he threw me a hanging slider instead," Moustakas said. "It was a little more in the middle than his other sliders. I was able to hit it pretty good."

Escobar saves the day: Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar produced his second great play of the game to save the go-ahead run and end the seventh inning. With runners at first and third and the tying run already in with two outs, Escobar laid out to make a diving catch on the grass in front of second base on a soft line drive off the bat of Carlos Peguero.

REPLAY REVIEW
The umpires only needed 36 seconds to confirm a call on a Rangers challenge in the eighth. Delino DeShields singled with two outs, then tried for his third steal of the game. This time, Perez threw out DeShields, who slid in headfirst.

WHAT'S NEXT
Royals: Yordano Ventura takes on the Rangers in the third of a four-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. CT. Ventura has had an up-and-down season which continued on Friday when he gave up four runs in six innings. All of the runs came in the second inning when he allowed the first six Detroit batters he faced to reach base. Ventura has 24 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings.

Rangers: Right-hander Yovani Gallardo looks for his first win since April 17 on Wednesday against the Royals. Gallardo is 0-4 with a 4.70 ERA in his past four starts, though opponents are hitting a combined .211 against him in that time. This is Gallardo's first start against Kansas City since 2007 in Milwaukee.
