Buehrle defeats Yanks for first time since 2004

TORONTO -- Russell Martin homered and Chris Colabello had a four-hit game in the Blue Jays' 5-1 victory over the Yankees on Wednesday night at Rogers Centre.

Veteran left-hander Mark Buehrle tossed five strong innings to earn his first victory against the Yankees since April 10, 2004. Buehrle had lost his previous 12 decisions vs. New York, and his .067 winning percentage (1-14) entering Wednesday was the lowest mark for any active pitcher with at least 10 decisions against a club.

Buehrle's lone blemish on Wednesday night came in the first inning when Alex Rodriguez doubled to put runners on second and third. Mark Teixeira drove in a run on a groundout, and that was the only damage the Yankees could generate against the 16-year veteran.

"To be honest with you, I was as excited about that one as his 200th, because it has been 10 or 11 years since he beat those guys," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "He's won 200 games, he's had an amazing career, no-hitter, perfect game, and he got the monkey off his back tonight."

CC Sabathia took the loss for New York after he allowed four runs over 6 1/3 innings. He surrendered nine hits and walked two while striking out four en route to his fifth loss of the year.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Colabello comes through: Colabello played a pivotal role in each of Toronto's first two rallies of the game. In the second inning, he hit a double down the third-base line, which put runners on second and third. Both runners eventually came around to score on a single by Ezequiel Carrera, and Colabello later contributed an RBI single to left in the fourth before scoring in the eighth after collecting his fourth hit. It was Colabello's second multihit game in as many days after being promoted from Triple-A Buffalo. More >

Buehrle survives: Buehrle appeared to be in some serious trouble in the fifth inning when he allowed a pair of singles and walked Rodriguez to load the bases with two outs. With Liam Hendriks warming in the bullpen, Buehrle induced a ground ball off the bat of Teixeira to end the inning and preserve a two-run lead for Toronto. Buehrle didn't return for the sixth, and he threw just 77 pitches while allowing six hits, walking one and striking out three. More >

Sabathia lifted in the seventh: The big lefty got the hook after Josh Donaldson's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh in a 4-1 game. Sabathia took a rare loss at Rogers Centre, falling to 7-2 lifetime in what was his first defeat in Toronto since Sept. 4, 2006. Sabathia gave up a pair of runs in the second and one in the fourth and sixth innings as he fell to 0-5 on the season. More >

"Last year, I probably would have went down, but I've got enough padding back there now so I feel good."

"Every game is a new game. It's not like every time I've gone out there I've had my butt handed to me. There have been some games I pitched good against them and it just didn't work out. I came in today like it was a normal start."
-- Buehrle, on his losing streak against New York

WHAT'S NEXT
Yankees: Nathan Eovaldi will make his sixth start of the season in the Yankees' series opener against the Orioles at Yankee Stadium on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET. The right-hander is 2-0 with 3.81 ERA. Eovaldi did not factor into the decision in his only 2015 start against Baltimore, in which he struck out a season-high nine while allowing eight hits and two runs over five innings. Chris Tillman will get the start for the Orioles.

Blue Jays: Toronto will enjoy a day off on Thursday before opening up a three-game series against the Red Sox at 7:07 p.m. ET on Friday night at Rogers Centre. Rookie right-hander Aaron Sanchez will take the mound in the series opener, with lefty Wade Miley scheduled to start for Boston. Sanchez has struggled with his command so far this season and is averaging more than seven walks per nine innings.
