Manfred meets with Rose about suspension
Commissioner tells all-time hits leader he'll decide by year's end
Commissioner Rob Manfred met with Pete Rose on Thursday to discuss Rose's application for reinstatement from his lifetime suspension, with Manfred telling Rose that he will have a decision by the end of the year.
"On Thursday, Sept. 24, Commissioner Rob Manfred met with Pete Rose and his representatives at Major League Baseball's New York office regarding Mr. Rose's application for reinstatement," MLB said in a news release issued on Friday. "Commissioner Manfred informed Mr. Rose that he will make a decision on his application by the end of the calendar year. Both parties have agreed to refrain from further comment."
Rose, the Major Leagues' all-time hits leader, was suspended for life during the 1989 season by late Commissioner Bart Giamatti after a lengthy investigation determined he had bet on baseball games while he was manager of the Reds. Rose has had the right to apply for reinstatement anytime after one year.
Rose, who later admitted that he had bet on baseball as a manager -- but not on or against the Reds -- reapplied for reinstatement after Manfred succeeded Bud Selig earlier this year to become MLB's 10th Commissioner.
