David Ortiz launches 'Papi Cares 2009' ticket program

Ortiz to host families in need for all 81 regular season home games at Fenway Park

BOSTON -- Red Sox Designated Hitter David Ortiz today announced the creation of 'Papi Cares 2009', a season-long ticket program that will provide fun-filled trips to Fenway Park for families facing difficult financial circumstances. A different family will be selected to attend each of the 81 regular season Red Sox home games in 2009.

"These are tough times and it is important that we all step up and find ways to help each other," said Ortiz. "Baseball is a family game and the 'Papi Cares' program will give special families an opportunity to spend time together at the ballpark."

Each family will receive four Right Field Box tickets purchased by Ortiz. He brought together some of his sponsor partners, along with the Boston Red Sox and ARAMARK, to help support the program. ARAMARK is providing a $50.00 food voucher good for all ballpark concession items including D'Angelo sandwiches, Papa Gino's pizza slices and Coca-Cola products. The families will also receive Big Papi T-shirts, courtesy of Reebok, and a Red Sox gift bag.

"David's generosity is legendary among his family, friends and fans. No one is surprised that when he saw a need, he decided to do something about it and do it in a big way," said John W. Henry, Red Sox Principal Owner. "The 'Papi Cares 2009' program represents the true spirit of what it means to be a Boston Red Sox and we are proud to play a small part in David's effort to bring joy to families in need."

The 'Papi Cares 2009' families will be selected from various community groups and non-profit organizations throughout New England. Inquiries can be sent to the Red Sox via email ([email protected]), or letter ('Papi Cares 2009' c/o Boston Red Sox, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, MA 02215).
